Come join Mikey and I for a fun packed day of adventure in the San Jacinto Wilderness. Let's bag two peaks on one hike.Tahquitz Peak at 8,826 feet is the second highest peak in the San Jacinto mountains after San Jacinto itself. The summit overlooks Idyllwild and is guarded by dramatic granite buttresses most notably Tahquitz Rock or Lily Rock. Hikers use several pronunciations but the correct Cahuilla pronunciation is "taw-kwish". We will also hike to nearby Red Tahquitz Peak at 8,756 feet which is another excellent and fun peak to summit. It's well worth the side trip as once you are at the top, you can see all of Coachella Valley, the entire Desert Divide, Garner Valley and Lake Hemet.
I have acquired 2 wilderness permits for 12 people each and plan on them going to good use. PLEASE only sign up if you seriously plan on going. No shows or last minute cancellations deny others the chance at a great and memorable day. If interest is high we will do our best to pull a few more wilderness permits and raise the hiker cap. We will meet at 7:30 A.M. and start shortly after.
DISTANCE: This hike is approximately 13 miles as planned, with about 3,500 feet of altitude gain. High elevation points of the hike will be at Tahquitz Peak lookout at 8,826 feet and Red Tahquitz Peak at 8,756. DIFFICULTY: This is a modestly strenuous hike. ABOUT THE HIKE: We will begin our adventure by meeting at the Humber Park parking lot, which can be reached off of Hwy 243, north on Pinecrest Ave. to Fern Valley Rd. At Fern Valley Road veer left and continue to the Humber Park Devil’s Slide Trailhead. Check the map link above for a printable map. We will meet at 7:30 A.M. and start the hike shortly after. We'll initially ascend up Devil's Slide Trail 1,600 feet in the first 2.5 miles, then veer right at Saddle Junction onto the PCT (there are a number of trails at this junction) and head up another 1,000 feet in altitude and 1.4 miles to South Ridge Trail Junction. We will head right on South Ridge .4 miles to a short spur up to Tahquitz Summit and the Lookout Tower. Next we will head back on South Ridge Trail the same way we came. At the PCT we will head right and go down .8 miles to a saddle then head up .8 miles to Red Tahquitz Summit. We will head back the same way we came taking the PCT but will take a side trail that heads through Little Tahquitz Valley where the beautiful Reeds Meadow & Skunk Cabbage Meadow are located. It's the same distance and a great trail with a different view back to Saddle Junction..( Thanks Rod, lol ). Back at Saddle Junction we will descend down Devil's Slide back to Humber Park,

Super! I would love to do it again... when I can go back to using my right hand to climb to Red Taquitz....
Great job, Keith and Mikey, in keeping the group happy hiking at their own pace and safe at the same time - how do you do that, ah?? :o)

Awesome hike today with varied terrain and incredible non stop scenery. We had zero no shows on this hike. A super strong group of fast hikers. We hiked hard and played even harder, so much fun. Oh, and such a group of comedians, every one of you. Thank you Mikey for teaming up with me today and making it a memorable experience for everyone. And thanks all for uploading so many great pictures to help cherish the day. Hope to see you all again soon!

I just posted directions to Idyllwild from the park n ride .. A little tip.... To avoid going all the way through the lovely town of Homeland & Hemet on the 74, you can take the Ramona Expressway. You will see a sign for this just before the 74. You can drive 55 on the road & it drops you off just outside of Hemet at the other end.
August 4
Kay, you carpooling? I see Scott & Ledy dropped out. Anyone would like to carpool from the SGV area?
August 3
OK everyone, hope you are all geared up and ready for a great hike tomorrow! HYDRATE big time, it looks like it will be on the warm side. Check Judith's weather forecast below in the comments for up to the minute weather forecasts. Looks like an awesome group of hikers tomorrow, I am so excited. See you in the A.M.
August 4
If anyone is interested in carpooling from the Irvine area (Irvine Blvd & 261 toll road) let me know. I plan to head out at 5:30 and hit the PHC at the Mexican Restaurant.
August 3
Mando & all that are meeting at the Orange Park n Ride... I just posted a Google map. Take 55 North to Lincoln/Nohl Ranch road. Exit here, turn left at the light on Nohl Ranch. Left on Lincoln, Left on Tustin. Go down about a block. Get in the lane that takes you back onto the freeway. Make a u-turn at this light & turn right into the PnR.
August 3
Hi Sarah. Yeah that would work. Do u know the cross streets for the PnR area we can meet there ??
August 3
Mando let's all meet at the PnR and if we can fit in one car that would b great and if not then we can caravan.

i know we are all experienced hikers, but please bring a minimum of 3 liters of water since it will be hot, more if you are a heavy drinker, lol. and like keith said, prehydrate well today and tomorrow before the hike.
August 3
Hi Gloria. You can ride with Robert and I if you would like. We are meeting at the Orange park and ride off 55 and Lincoln at 5:30.
August 3
Yes Keith, going this way is 1.4 miles, the same as going back on the other trail. The gain/loss is -420'. There are campgrounds just outside of the meadows. The meadows themselves are protected, "Can't walk through them, although during winter it's pretty much covered with snow & you can snow shoe over it. There are campsites outside of the area. Alot of people backpack up to there, especially the Boy Scouts.

Now that I am on the hike, is there any room to carpool from OC? I am coming from Huntington Beach. If necessary, I can drive but would like company and someone to share driving. Thanks.
August 3
Judith my weather girl is here! It looks like 86-90 degrees in Idyllwild Sunday. I think the rule is 5 degrees cooler every 1000'.
Idyllwild is at 5620' & the Saddle is 8100' . So maybe 80 at the peak? Whew!
By the way...Anyone want to stop at the Mexican place in town after the hike?
1 · August 2
Thanks for the offer. I'm gonna go w Robert though so we'll all have a bit more room. :)
August 2
Hey Rod. I did see that side trail on the map when I designed the hike but could not tell the elevation on it so skipped it. I would like to see Reeds and Skunk Cabbage ( are there camp grounds at Skunk? ) so I see no problem taking the side trail detour home. When we are out there if you can point out the trail I would be grateful. Thanks for the insight and see you all Sunday!
August 2
By the way Keith, I was thinking that at the Saddle junction, I know we'll head right (South) to Tahquitz then head up to Red Tahquitz. Well, after we do Red Tahquitz & come back down onto the trail, there is that other trail that heads through Little Tahquitz Valley where the beautiful Reeds Meadow & Skunk Cabbage Meadow are. It's on the way back to Saddle Junction.
It's the same short distance as the trail heading down to Tahquitz that we'll do. Just a different view.

Hey Robert any chance you would drive a group from OC? (Rod and Carrie you still need a ride?).

July 26
Hey Carrie. I'd love to carpool with you and Rod if that's ok. Let me know what time to be at the PnR if that will work.
July 26
Keith, thank you. I will be looking forward to hiking with you again. And I will try my best to keep up with Ledy. I just hope she won't leave me too far behind.
July 26
Ledy & Larry - I'm on the western end of the SGV and would be interested in a carpool as well. Will you be on the Bridge hike? If so, please introduce yourselves.
July 11
Any carpoolers from the San Gabriel Valley? Please let me know. I will share for the expense of gas and have an Adventure Pass. Thanks.
