Weekly 5:00 PM Wednesday indoor climbing at OSU in Corvallis. OSU has two climbing gyms with 42'-43' walls and bouldering areas. See:
The default Meetup location is Dixon Recreation Center. However, we will meet at McAlexander Field House whenever Dixon is closed.
Carl will likely show up around 5:15 as he works in Sweet Home. If he is not there when you arrive, please start without him.
For wall climbing, OSU requires a belay skills check-out first, to make sure that you will know how to belay according to their specific safety practices. Belay check-outs are scheduled daily at 5:15 PM and 6:45 PM; currently they are only offered at McAlexander. There is a $4 charge for the check-out, and it's required annually for everyone. If you've never done any belaying before this, they will teach you how to do it safely. Please arrive a little early; with OSU in full swing belay classes can fill up fast.
The bouldering walls don't require any check-outs. Although it is preferable to have a spotter, you may play on the bouldering walls solo. If you have had zero climbing experience, then come to one of these Meetups and we'll give you a brief tour, show you what belaying and climbing are about, and you can try out the bouldering wall.
If you are not an OSU student, there is a $6 admission fee every visit. Both locations have shoes ($1) and harnesses (no charge) available, so you can get into this activity quite cheaply.
McAlexander Field House is on the east side of the baseball stadium; Dixon Rec Center is on the west side. Parking without a permit is OK after 5:00 PM. Go to SW Washington Way and turn north onto Benton Place (a one-way street with parking), or go past Benton Place and turn into the baseball stadium parking lot. The entrance to McAlex faces Benton Place; the entrance to Dixon faces the stadium.
Wall climbing involves belaying which requires two people; the person who is climbing, and a belayer at the other end of the rope. You are welcome to show up at the OSU walls and try to find someone who needs a climbing partner, but it's hit-or-miss. A weekly Meetup gives people a better chance to find climbing partners on a regular basis.
For any given week, if Carl is the only RSVP then he likely won't show up, so please be sure to RSVP if you're interested. When you arrive, be on the look-out for other Meetupians and introduce yourself. Please don't be shy!
