(Local) DAYHIKE - UMSTEAD RUINS & HISTORY – PART 3

  • March 23 · 10:00 AM

BEFORE RSVPing, please make sure that you READ this event description completely! Yes, there will be a test! Event capacity = 10-12.

Here is an opportunity to experience parts of Umstead State park that you may have never seen if you have always stayed on the marked hiking trails. On this series of hikes we will explore some of the wilder and more remote sections of the park keeping our eyes peeled for natural wonders and signs of previous habitation. Now we have the assistance of the recently published “Stories In Stone” by Tom Weber that puts names and faces to some of the things that we might find. We will be hiking on maintained and unmaintained trails, old roads, bridle trails, and cross-country. Because of this I am rating this outing STRENUOUS and suitable for FIT HIKERS ONLY! Sorry, No kids or Pets.

DETAILS:

Date: SATURDAY, March 23rd.
Time: 10:00 A.M. Please be ready to start hiking. We should be back by mid-afternoon.
Distance: Approximately 8-10 miles.
Location: William B. Umstead Park – North Side – U.S. 70 /Glenwood Ave. entrance
Directions: See http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/wium/directions.php

Please meet at the SECOND parking lot at the FAR END of the park entrance road.

WHAT TO BRING:
Please dress appropriately for the expected weather conditions. This includes bringing foolproof rain gear and sturdy hiking boots. Please bring enough water to last the entire hike, lunch, and a snack. Bring a map and compass or a GPS if you would like some practice staying found.

Active or pending precipitation will unfortunately cancel the outing. Fog, mist, or cold temperatures will not. In case of a cancellation I will update THIS EVENT on the THOG WEB SITE by 8:00 A.M. on Saturday morning.

SIGNUP:
Unfortunately, due to previous RSVP abuse leader approval is required. Put yourself on the waiting list. Once I have verified your attendance history and answers to questions I will move you to the “Going” RSVP list if the trip capacity (10-12) has not yet been reached.

Remember, YOUR RSVP IS YOUR COMMITMENT TO THIS TRIP and your future good standing in THOG depends on how well you honor your commitments. Late cancellations (less than 36 hours before the event) or no-shows will be noted in your THOG attendance history and may restrict your ability to sign up for future THOG events. Members are responsible for the attendance and suitability of their guests to participate.

If you have any questions you can send me an email via the THOG web site (Steve L).

Thank you Steve! I learned a lot about the degree of change that can occur over just a handful of generations, and had a great time while doing so. I will no longer feel compelled to stick to the blazed trails...

    Steve,
I'm going to need to back out because something just came up that I need to get done. Unfortunately, not as interesting as a ruins hike.
