(Local) NCMA Trail + JC Raulston Arboretum/N & O Annual Birdhouse Contest

  • Apr 6, 2013 · 9:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join THOG for a walk starting at the North Carolina Museum of Art. We will walk the greenway path over the pedestrian bridge over 440 to Meredith College. We will then cross over Hillsborough Street and proceed to the JC Raulston Arboretum. You will have some time to independently explore the grounds of the arboretum. On this particular date, there is a special display of the birdhouse entries for the Annual News and Observer Birdhouse Contest. This will be THOG's 6th year doing this event. It has been a lot of fun each year looking at the creative birdhouses.  In addition to the plant sale, there will also be a new section of food vendors (including NC State ice cream), garden vendors and educational demos. We have typically taken about a 30 min break at the arboretum, but I may make our break a little longer due to this new section (40-45 min?). We will then return via the same path, except that we will swing by the pond area. The NCMA path is paved with some gentle to moderate hills. There are a couple of short sections without sidewalks on the path to the arboretum. Due to the regulations at the arboretum, NO PETS will be allowed on this walk.

Total distance - Approx 6.2 miles
Pace will be moderate to brisk (please only RSVP if you know that you can walk 3 miles continuously at a brisk pace)
This is rated a Level 2 event by THOG guidelines

Meet in the parking lot closest to the entrance of the NCMA on Blue Ridge Rd. (take an immediate right after turning in the main entrance). Restrooms are available at the arboretum.

Due to the popularity of this event, I kindly ask that you only RSVP "yes" if you are 100% commited to attending. In addition, please DO NOT show up unless you are a THOG member or guest with a confirmed "yes" RSVP. This event is limited to a certain number of participants for a reason.

As always, great people and conversations. Not quite as many entries for the birdhouse contest this year but still fun to look at. No one got blown away by the wind :) Hope to see you on a future event soon.

Ambitious group...might do this, but at a slower pace, in the afternoon.

Catherine, I am going to move you to a "no" RSVP status based on your comment here. It sounds like you do not plan to go with the group at 9:30 and that is what the "yes" RSVP is for. If I am incorrect, please let me know and I will move you back to yes. Thanks.
