Backpack Conditioning Hike @ New Hope Overlook @ Jordan Lake

• GPS Location: [masked],[masked]

• New Hope Overlook Recreation Area.
Time to train for your epic 2013 backpack adventures! Let’s hike the Red Trail counterclockwise at the New Hope Overlook area of Jordan Lake. The trail is posted as a 5.4 mile loop (5.1 miles by my GPS). The trail follows the shoreline of the peninsula with pastoral lake views for much of the loop this time of year. The hike is strenuous due to many short but steep hills and a 2-3mph pace for a ~2 hour trip including breaks. We will regroup at trail forks with several stops for overlooks, water/snacks and photos. Recommended: backpacks (loaded to full weight), hiking boots, trecking poles, water, snacks, raingear and layers appropriate for the weather (for easy delayering as you warm up). Not recommended: children or dogs.

Please only RSVP if you are definitely able to attend: no shows and last minute cancellations will be noted. From US 64, turn south (LEFT from Cary/Apex) (RIGHT from Pittsboro) on Beaver Creek Road/SR1008 and continue for three miles. Turn right onto Pea Ridge Road and continue for 2.2 miles. Turn right onto W. H. Jones Rd, continue .1 miles to park entrance. After entering the park, pass the booth (closed with no fee this time of year), turn right (to avoid the campsites) and you will soon see the parking lot on your left. We will meet in the first parking lot on your left near the trailhead.

Steve: I can't send you and email, so I'm going to put my comment here. I am sorry that I missed you today. I left a few minutes late. Then I went sailing past Beaver Dam Rd (it's called Farrington on the right, which is where I was looking at the sign). I think they must charge entrance fees starting at 9 a.m. because I went through the gate about 9:10 and paid $6!

Since the RSPs were closed I hiked this today. If you fill your pack with gear this will be a nice trek. Nice up and down sections. Just a side note, they are charging fees as you enter. The charge is $6 per vehicle.

I'm terribly sorry, but I have to cancel. I have a large amount of school work to finish, and some midterms to prepare for before monday.

@Scott -- absolutely backpacks are optional. I will carry full weight thus our pace will be subdued -- 2 hrs for 5 miles. We will have several backpack trips later in the year. Good fodder for trail chatter!

Hi Steve -- Are you planning this conditioning series for a particular backpacking trip later in the year? Can we still attend without a 'full pack'?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
