Come hunt for wild flowers along this botanically diverse trail. This hike has a little of everything... rocky gorge with streams, open balds, a large rock "castle", and great views up along the Blue Ridge Parkway. This day hike on Sat.will start at 10 am SHARP from the trailhead and is 11 miles long, with an elevation gain of 1800 ft. This is a STRENUOUS hike with the first 3 miles having a 1700 ft gain. The first 0.5 miles is along Little Rock Castle Creek but then its pretty much straight up along a narrow rocky trail on the side of Rocky Knob.
So... EXPERIENCED hikers only who can maintain a moderate pace uphill, no pets or children. Bring lunch, proper clothing, including rain gear and hiking boots, water, and a positive attitude :-) Flower identification books are a plus.
Carpooling will be by contacting others going on the trip. The Eubanks Park and Ride in Chapel hill is a good place to meet. The drive is about 2.5 hours from the Triangle, hence the 7am start time. We will be hiking from the old CCC campground just north of Stuart VA. Directions will follow.
Please do NOT sign up for this hike unless you are sure you can go. You will not get back to the Triangle
until after 8-9pm, so if you need to be somewhere else Sat night this hike is not for you.Due to the length of this hike we need to start at 10 am. If you arrive at the trail head later than this you are welcome to catch up or hike on your own.
