Hike New Hope Overlook @ Jordan Lake

Google Maps will find it.,+New+Hill,+NC&hl=en&sll=35.170517,-79.860994&sspn=6.257367,14.567871&oq=498+w+h+&hnear=498+W+H+Jones+Rd,+New+Hill,+North+Carolina+27562&t=m&z=16

Good hike in Jordan Lake area that I credit to Steve H for posting last week.
New Hope Overlook part of the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area.  We will hike the Red Trail-Blue Trail loop for about 5 miles in about 2 hours.  This takes us back to near the trailhead/parking area.  Then those that want can back track the Blue Trail for another 2-2.5 miles for about another hour.  The trail follows the shoreline of the peninsula with views of lake. The hike is moderately strenuous due to many short hills, but less so than Company Mill Trail at Umstead (my standard gauge for around here)  Stops for overlooks, water/snacks and photos.

Kids and dogs (on leash) ok if they can keep up.  As with other NC Parks, llamas are prohibited without special permit. (you can look it up.)

Be on time, we will start by 9:10.

Bring water.  Hiking boots or shoes (I tried minimalist shoes there for the first time with success), trekking poles, water.  Check the forecast for weather.  The vast majority of hike is in shade, so this is a good hike for a warm day.

From US 64, turn south (LEFT from Cary/Apex) (RIGHT from Pittsboro) at Beaver Creek Road/SR1008 (Farrington Rd becomes Beaver Creek at US 64) and continue for three miles. Turn right onto Pea Ridge Road and continue for 2.2 miles. Turn right onto W. H. Jones Rd, continue .1 miles to park entrance. After entering the park, pass the booth.  $6 per car fee to enter, although someone said they did not start charging until 9:00 am.   Turn right (to avoid the campsites) and you will soon see the parking lot on your left. We will meet in the first parking lot on your left near the trailhead.

Good idea to carpool Gene. But I start from Chatham County and relatively close to Jordan Lake.

I'll be driving from the Hillsborough area on I-40. If any of the Chapel Hill/Carboro folks would like a ride, I'm happy to swing by the Eubanks Road park and ride lot and pick them up between 7:45am-8am. But definitely want to be on the road by 8am. I have room for a couple people and their gear. Just let me know on here. I will give my cell number by private e-mail if needed.
