(Overnight) Bear Island Beach Camping

  • Aug 23, 2013 · 5:00 PM

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE EVENT DESCRIPTION BEFORE RSVPING!

Join your THOG friends for a weekend of sand, surf, and sun on Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park.

IMPORTANT: You must reserve your own campsite through the state park website  (http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/habe/reserve.php) or share with someone who has a site.  Only two tents are allowed per site, so space is limited.  Before RSVPing, you must reserve a site or secure one with someone else.  I have the event set up as wait-list, so that once you confirm that you have a reserved site, I will move you to going.  Please put which site you are in in the RSVP or comment section.  Also, when you book your campsite, you agree to the State Park's reservation and cancellation policy and if you no-show, you will not receive a refund for the campsite.

Access to Bear Island is limited to ferry or private boat.  You will need to park at the Hammocks Beach State Park visitor center and either take the ferry ($5 for round-trip, check the park's website for schedule) or paddle in.  The last ferry leaves at 530 PM, so make sure you arrive in time.

Since there is no vehicle access, you must carry in all your food, camping supplies, etc.  The concession stand may be open, but they only sell snacks and soft drinks.  No real food or ice.  Depending on your campsite, you will need to walk and carry all your stuff 0.5 to 1.5 miles from the ferry dock to the site.  Also, stakes are ineffective at securing your tent.  One option is to fill Walmart or grocery bags with sand and tie them to the corners of the tent.

Additional rules for this trip:

  • No alcohol :(
  • No open fires
  • No pets
  • No white flashlights (use a red light or put a red shirt over a white light)

Amanda and I will only be camping Saturday night.  We plan to leave early Saturday morning and catch the first ferry over.  However, if your schedule permits and you can secure a campsite for Friday night, you are welcome to come on Friday and we'll see you Saturday morning.

Any questions, feel free to email me.

Thank you every one and especially Justin and Amanda for letting me share your camp site and giving me ride (most of which i slept through :)) It was nice to see familiar faces and meet new people. I didn't know i could pretend like i owned an island at least for a night until now. Perfect weather, the sunset, sea breeze and the clear starry sky are the things i will remember for a while. One of the best trips i had with THOG, I should rate this 10 stars!

Great weekend! Thanks again Justin and Amanda! I agree with Heidi after six was the best time when all the day beach goers left!

This was a perfect weekend get-away to a gorgeous island! Loved the feeling of having it nearly all to ourselves once the day-users leave for the night. Thanks so much Justin!

Anyone has a campsite to share with?

I have some suggestions after being here last weekend. If the wind dies down at all, the biting midges will carry you away. They can get in your tent at night (unless you have a very expensive tent I imagine). Cover yourself in spray before you fall asleep in case this happens. We are all quite miserable! Bites that itch 2 days later and lotions don't help. I am not an entomologist, but I am pretty sure that's what they were. Hundreds of tiny black flies on the inside when we woke up. Not trying to be a downer, just be prepared.
