Let's skip the gym and hike the 7.2 mile Sycamore Trail this week! The Sycamore Trail is a loop trail that has moderate hills, exposed roots and rocks and is marked clearly by blue triangular blazes. This tends to be a rather fast paced hike, so it may not be appropriate for beginners or slower hikers. Hikers must be prepared to hike about 3.5 miles per hour with infrequent stops. Those who wish to do so can wear backpacks to increase the weight bearing exercise experienced on this hike. Frequently this hike divides into two groups of differing speeds. We will meet at the stairs near the trailhead which are located in the last parking lot of the Glenwood Avenue entrance to the park. We will leave promptly, so please be on time.
Please be prepared to encounter stream crossings and/or damaged bridges this week. Several bridges were washed away during the heavy rain due to Tropical Storm Andrea. Some bridges may be in place, but in weakened condition. Park personnel have indicated that we are allowed to use the trail, but emphasize that we should use extreme caution when crossing streams. At the very least, expect that your shoes may become wet.
Please note that the directions to this entrance, which is located off of US 70, are as follows:
From I-540 take the US 70 exit. Travel southeast on US 70, and turn right on Umstead Parkway. Drive to the furthest parking lot and meet at the stairs.
