(Local) Sycamore Trail Fitness Hike

Let's skip the gym and hike the 7.2 mile Sycamore Trail this week! The Sycamore Trail is a loop trail that has moderate hills, exposed roots and rocks and is marked clearly by blue triangular blazes. This tends to be a rather fast paced hike, so it may not be appropriate for beginners or slower hikers.  Hikers must be prepared to hike about 3.5 miles per hour with infrequent stops. Those who wish to do so can wear backpacks to increase the weight bearing exercise experienced on this hike. Frequently this hike divides into two groups of differing speeds. We will meet at the stairs near the trailhead which are located in the last parking lot of the Glenwood Avenue entrance to the park. We will leave promptly, so please be on time.

Please be prepared to encounter stream crossings and/or damaged bridges this week.  Several bridges were washed away during the heavy rain due to Tropical Storm Andrea.  Some bridges may be in place, but in weakened condition.  Park personnel have indicated that we are allowed to use the trail, but emphasize that we should use extreme caution when crossing streams.  At the very least, expect that your shoes may become wet.

Please note that the directions to this entrance, which is located off of US 70, are as follows:

From I-540 take the US 70 exit. Travel southeast on US 70, and turn right on Umstead Parkway. Drive to the furthest parking lot and meet at the stairs.

(Do not go to the entrance off of I-40.)

Sorry to hear that, Andrea. Would Tuesday nights work for you?

Most Tuesdays work great for me right now! I'm in class on Thursdays until mid-September.

It is personal preference. You can use a rain coat to prevent from getting soaked on your upper torso or possibly just get soaked and enjoy. Don't let the rain discourage you.

I'm a beginner hiker (have hiked several times before) so should I be worry about the rain tomorrow? What rain gear do I need? like the basic rain jacket? Please let me know

  • Heidi

Hello Happy Hikers! Just wanted to let you know that showers and thunderstorms are possible tomorrow. If you feel uncomfortable with hiking in the rain, please let me know. If not, you may want to bring your rain gear. Thanks!

Heidi, Is there really a limit on the number of participants? If not, I would like to attend tomorrow.
