Ski/Snowboard Trip to Snowshoe in West Virginia

This location is shown only to members

[Note:  What time you get there will be dependent on your driver.  There is no official "meeting point" for carpooling for this trip unless drivers want to set that up.]

Hey Everyone -

It's been a while since THOG has done a ski/snowboard trip so now is the time to do it.  We are staying in 3 bedroom condos located on the Snowshoe resort.  We will be leaving on Friday Feb 24 and staying through Sunday Feb 26 (Note:  It's optional to ski Friday so it'll be up to your carpool/preference when you will head to the resort).  Prices are as follow (although some may vary pending on final numbers and taxes).

Lodging:  $50 + tax / night (2 night stay)  We are staying at Leatherbark on the resort which is approx. 350 ft. from the ski lifts.  They are three bedroom condos with a full kitchen, living area with a sleeper sofa, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, electric fireplace, and washer/dryer.  We currently have 3 condos reserved and I will get another one if we have more people.  It will be 2 people to a bed.

Lift Tickets:  $35/day (same price regardless if you are doing part day or whole day)

Rentals:  Approx. $19/day (renting from Ski Barn)

Tubing: $15 / 2 hours

Lessons:  $36 / 1 hour and 45 minutes

Please contact me ASAP if you are interested in going.  You will need to email me the following information:

1.  Will you be needing rentals/lift tickets/lessons and for what days?

2.  Confirmation that you are staying for 2 nights (if not, email me privately for other alternatives and pricing)

3.  Arrangements to meet me for payment or if you plan on mailing a check.

Your spot is NOT reserved/guaranteed unless payment for lodging, etc. is received in full.  Additional details will be sent out to those members who will be attending this event.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Spots are limited so this will be a first come first serve basis.

@ TESS -Yes, at the top of the mountain they have pet-friendly condos and at the bottom of the mountain they have pet-friendly hotel rooms. Another reference I found was Mountain Valley Properties (304) 572-2210, advertising frequently that they have pet friendly rentals. (or find a local vet to board and give the pets a vacation too, :-p ). Raleigh-local vets I've used and recommend are either Hayes Barton on Glenwood Ave. and Spring Forest Animal Hospital.

I have a ride up on Friday w/ Jean but hoping to stay to board some on Sunday. Is anyone planning to spend some time on the slopes on Sunday who could give me a ride back to N. Raleigh? I have a snowboard and I can chip in for gas. Thx!

For those of you who are skiing/snowboarding on Friday, the lift tickets will be in your name to be picked up at the lodge. Further instructions will be sent out to everyone but just wanted to give you a heads up so you know whatever time you get there, you are good to go to head up to the slopes. =)

Alright people, I'm excited! Are you? Down to the nitty gritty. If you have spot in your car, please post how many as well as what you are planning (going up early Friday, coming back early Sun, etc.) That way people who still need rides know who to ask. Also, for pot luck Saturday, I need 3-4 volunteers to make spaghetti, 2 to make pasta salad, and then everyone else can post on the forum what they plan to bring. Let me know if you have any questions. =) *wants to play in snow... grin*

Please use the following directions to get there:
North on US-220 to Roanoke and on to Clifton Forge, VA, then I-64 West to White Sulphur Springs, then 92 North to WV-39 West to Marlinton, WV; and 26 miles North on US-219 to Snowshoe. (Highway 92 is a very drivable route from I-64 to WV39).
Speaking from experience, if you just use your GPS, you'll end up on some really small roads with 40+ switchbacks. See http://www.snowshoemtn.com/getting-here/driving-direction... for more information.

Andy, have you previously driven to snowshoe? If so how is the drive? This will be my first time making the drive, any tips?

I have. One direction I followed my GPS and it was terrible, the other direction I drove the way I sent that Showshoe recommends. It's a long drive, but you'll find it will take less time (even though google maps/gps say otherwise), especially on a snowy day.

Crazyness... Hello peoples. I just tore my ACL... so there will be no boarding 4 me. But, I love snowshoe and could function as, well, as a professional putzarounder... If I could score a ride, awesome. Nancy, I can PayPal u 100 bucks asap?

Cole - This trip is completely booked as far as the condos and hotel rooms I made arrangements for. You are more than welcome to join us on this trip but you are responsible for making your own lodging arrangements. You would need to contact individual drivers to see if they have room in their carpools.

Just as a heads up, I won't be getting to the resort until 4/5p.m. and I'm the only one who can get keys to the condos so if you get there early, just hang out in the village and then swing by around 5/5:30p.m. to get keys from me for your condo.

So I'm bringing cups, plates, forks (for 40 ppl worth), brownie mix, chips, and I'm not sure what else. I have room for one more in my carpool leaving at 9:45a.m. if anyone is still looking for a ride.

If anyone needs any last minute clothes/gear, REI in Cary is having an additional 20% off all clearance merchandise (Cary location only due to the move that happens in March) so check it out if you need stuff.

As I make last minute preps for tomorrow mornings launch, I figured I'd share what I have in case a driver finds themselves in need. /// jumper cables for dead batteries, a small compressor to inflate flat tires, an emergency tire repair kit, a long tow strap, and a slim jim and wire coat hangar if you lock keys in an older car

Please remember that everyone is responsible for picking up their own rentals at Ski Barn - Rt. 219 & Snowshoe Rd., Slatyfork, WV 26291 - ½ Mile from Snowshoe Welcome Center. Also, the last town that all cell service providers should work will be either White Sulphur Springs or Lewisburg, depending on which way you come up.

Excellent. The planning appeared thorough and was well-executed. Communication and interaction was ample, and the group organizer did an excellent job of seeing everything through to point of providing the best experience.
