(Regional) Stone Mountain Day Hike

  • Dec 15, 2012 · 7:00 AM

Join you THOG friends for a day trip to Stone Mountain State Park.  We will hike approximately 9 miles on the Stone Mountain Loop, Cedar Rock, Wolf Rock, and Middle/Lower Falls trails.  Total elevation gain will be more than 1000 feet, so fit hikers only due to the distance and elevation.  We will hike at a brisk pace (3 mph flat, 2 mph uphill) but stop frequently to enjoy the views, waterfalls, etc.

Don't forget to bring:

  • 2 to 3 liters of water
  • Good hiking boots and poles
  • Rain gear (currently 10% chance of rain, but it only rains if someone forgets rain gear)
  • Lunch - we will plan to have a scenic lunch on top of Stone Mountain
  • Layers of clothing - temperatures will be in the 50s

We will meet at a carpool location (emailed to participants 24 hours before) in the Triangle and leave for Stone Mountain at 7 to maximize daylight hours.  Don't forget to share gas costs with your driver.  On the way home, we can stop for dinner along the way.  Don't plan to be back in the Triangle before 8 PM.

Any questions, shoot me an email.

This is a fantastic dayhike: GREAT VIEWS from the top of STONE MT-a most unusual geologic monolith, several waterfalls-including one that cascades down over 100', fine views of Stone Mt. from the valley floor and Wolf Rock, and a well maintained exhibit of an 1800's isolated homestead. And, almost all of the travel is on fast interstate highways. And Justin is a good leader!
