[Note:  What time you get there will be dependent on your driver.  There is no official "meeting point" for carpooling for this trip unless drivers want to set that up.]

Hey Everyone -

Last year's ski/snowboard trip was so much fun that we decided to do it again!  We are staying in 3 bedroom condos located on the Snowshoe resort.  We will be leaving on Friday Feb 24 and staying through Sunday Feb 26 (Note:  It's optional to ski Friday so it'll be up to your carpool/preference when you will head to the resort).  Prices are as follow (although some may vary pending on final numbers and taxes).

Lodging:  $100 per person for 2 nights.  We are staying at Leatherbark on the resort which is approx. 350 ft. from the ski lifts.  They are three bedroom condos with a full kitchen, living area with a sleeper sofa, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, electric fireplace, and washer/dryer.  We currently have 5 condos reserved and I will get another one if we have more people.  The condo sleeps 8 however the sleeping arrangements work out for that.  Assuming 2 people per queen/king bed unless there are bunk beds.

Lift Tickets:  $35/day (same price regardless if you are doing part day or whole day)

Rentals:  Approx. $19/day (renting from Ski Barn)

Tubing: $15 / 2 hours

Lessons:  $36 / 1 hour and 45 minutes

Please contact me ASAP if you are interested in going.  You will need to email me the following information:

1.  Will you be needing rentals/lift tickets/lessons and for what days?

2.  Confirmation that you are staying for 2 nights (if not, email me privately for other alternatives and pricing)

3.  Arrangements to meet me for payment or if you plan on mailing a check.

Your spot is NOT reserved/guaranteed unless payment for lodging, etc. is received in full.  Additional details will be sent out to those members who will be attending this event.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Spots are limited so this will be a first come first serve basis.

Thanks again for organizing this event and getting us such great deals. I don't know what sacrifice you had to make to the weather gods to pull off such a gorgeous day, but we thank you for that, too. Mad props!

Hey everyone -- just wanted to point out that there is currently a winter storm watch for WV tomorrow with the expectation of significant ice accumulation. Keep your eye on the weather, give yourselves plenty of time to get there, and be very careful! The roads up the mountain are very curvy and are especially treacherous when icy!

To the newcomers to Snowshoe and the surrounding area, there is no cell phone signal for really all providers anywhere near the resort area. About an hour to an hour and half away, everything will cease to work. This can make for a difficult return trip to Cary/Raleigh if you are using an Android or iPhone supported GPS device. You might make it up there ok, but coming back will be a whole new adventure. I would recommend taking a Garmin Nuvi or like device with a non data service supported device to make your adventure up and back. Paper maps are a great back up tool. Also the roads are very curvy with lots of locals that drive way to fast, so please take your time and be careful. Look forward to having a great weekend of skiing and boarding.

The reason there are no cell towers, almost no WiFi hotspots, etc is the enormous and very cool Radio Telescope nearby. Check it out at http://www.nrao.edu/ . It is worth a visit on the way back. The guided tour will explain some of the cool discoveries they've made (galaxies & chemical makeup of distant objects), take you within a few hundred yards of the massive dish (more than 100 yards across), and explain how they use a specially equipped truck to pinpoint and shield microwave ovens and other leaky household devices within the radio quiet zone.

It's the Greenbank Telescope or GBT, by the way. That link may include several radio observatories.

Hey Folks, I am planning to leave Durham Friday around 4 (flexible) and ski until around 2 or 3 (flexibile) on Monday! I would love to have someone to ride with me one or both directions. I'll stay at the Inn on Sunday night. Ping me if you want to ride either direction with me.

Folks, I am looking for carpool. I plan to leave on Friday afternoon (around 4, but this time is somewhat flexible) and return on Sunday afternoon after skiing. I have SUV, can take 2 more people + gear, or I can ride with someone and split the cost. Anyone interested?
