Canoe Camping: Great Dismal Swamp "Reservation"

  • Mar 21, 2009 · 8:00 AM

Lets go canoe camping in eastern NC one more time before the ticks, chiggers and mosquitoes start swarming. We will canoe or kayak the ditch canal to the Great Dismal Swamp reservation (aka campground). This is a 3.5 mile paddle. Once at the reservation, you will be able to explore Lake Drummond (one of 2 natural lakes in VA). Best part of the trip is that there are no fees for camping!

As a bonus, you should canoe/kayak at Merchant's Millpond on the way back home!

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Each participant must have their own canoe or kayak! There are no rentals at the launch point
  • Each participant must have their own camping equipment
  • Each participant must be self sufficient!

    LOGISTICS:

  • It is a 3.5 hour drive to the trailhead

Had a fun time with a good group of strangers!
I think Merchant's Millpond is a much better destination than Dismal Swamp though.

What a great trip! I like it that Chris gave us just enough, but not too much, direction; it was perfect for independent types. Matt, I'm sorry you had to leave early; thank you so much for all your help at the put-in. (You would have been proud of my packing for the return trip!) Thanks to everyone who shared food, laughter, physical strength...and website photos. What can I say about the lake and the cypress trees...? "Awesome" is hardly adequate.

Great camping spot, good company. Was billed as a self-sufficient trip, so minimal direction was given, it was a pretty loose confederation of campers. We had a great time.

Nice easy access. Plan for more time getting to the campground; paddling upstream. Well-kept site with great access to the lake with a lot to explore.

It was really fantastic. Amateur paddlers like us were able to have no problem with the trip.
The Sunset views from the lake were great.
      The people were great too!!!
      Nice trip

I will be on road from Raleigh at 8 - should be at the put 3:5 hours later?

Carol, yes, although from the boat launch, you want to go SOUTH (LEFT) on the Dismal Swamp Canal then WEST (RIGHT) into the feeder ditch. I made a map : http://meetup.smugmug.com/photos/495096837_JnGYw-L.jpg

      Chris,
Does this look like the route we will be taking to the Lake?

No carpooling, unless someone has a canoe/kayak rack. Options are:
      1) Meet at a carvan site in Raleigh (TBD)
      2) Meet at the put-in
      3) Meet at the campsite. E-mail to follow

At what time and where are we supposed to meet? I guess since this is a canoe/Kayak trip there won't be much car pooling.
