Cycle the Friendship Trail - Port Colbourne/Fort Erie

The Friendship Trail forms the southerly link of the Greater Niagara Circle Route, a 150km multi-use trail system winding through the beautiful Niagara Peninsula.

The Friendship Trail is also part of the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail - connecting to Trenton, Ontario, and the 17,000km Trans-Canada Trail - connecting to Victoria, British Columbia, St. John, Newfoundland and Tuktyuktuk.

The Friendship Trail extends 16 kms across the Town of Fort Erie, running parallel to the north shore of Lake Erie. Beginning at the Port Colborne border in the west, this relaxing and picturesque trail takes visitors through lush farmland, quaint villages, pristine watersheds, and quiet residential areas as it leads to historic Old Fort Erie, Lake Erie and the Niagara River Recreation Trail .

This will be an "out and back" trip (not a loop) and we can add on to the trail at either end as it's part of the Greater Niagara Circle Loop.I believe it is entirely paved.

Bring lots of water, a snack, cash in case we stop along the way, a camera, and sunscreen. Hopefully it's not too humid that day, and no rain!

We did 55-56 km, stopped at the Fort for a snack. It did rain on the way back, my bike is clean for the first time this season:-). And yes Peter, I really enjoyed the Friendship Trail, very picturesque, especially this time of year.

Saw the samosa (or should I say, smelled first...awwwww.... then saw) as we rode by.... omgosh, had I known I would have left room in my bag. Sooooo tempting but just another reason to do a return trip! lol!!!

Woo-hoo, 55 km! I loved this trail, it's paved and flat and the scenery was amazing. Loved the market (with strudel of course) that was right on the trail! I will definitely book this one again.

Great trail! A little hot coffee and hot cherry strudel works wonders. Thanks for organizing the ride, glad we finally made it there.

Yay, the site is back up! Well, it's not supposed to rain but will be windy as all heck, but the ride is still on! Not sure if I'll be able to go as far as usual if the wind is really strong, but I'll see what I can do. I think the trail is straight forward and easy to follow so we can each do what we can. See you there!

In my new job is Weather Girl: As of 7:30 pm Friday night, Saturday's forecast for Port Colborne is 20% chance of rain, increasing to 40% by 4:00 pm. Wind gusts of 47-48 km/h! What are the chances it will be on our backs both ways?

    September 6, 2013

  • Judy L

Well, the weather forecast looks so much better as far as the rain goes, down to 30% chance now for Saturday, which is much better than the 90% it was showing yesterday! Let's hope it doesn't switch back. It will be windy however, up to 44 km/h gusts in the afternoon. Rosemary, I think you've done this trail before, is it pretty sheltered?

Btw we are also on weather watch but intellicast doesn't show any isolated activity until 4.00pm. Have a great ride will be with ya in spirit as we cycle the other side of the parkway.

Thanks for the info Peter, I'm glad to hear there will be a canopy of trees, especially if it's a sunny day. May the wind always be on our back :-). Enjoy your ride!

We're not parking at Knoll Park but in a parking area that's right beside the trai. Not sure about the 64 km, lol. And hey, what's with the weather forecast, it's taken a turn for the worse :-(.

Hi Judy: will it be too much to ask to move the date to Sunday? I have a spot at the Saint Jacob's Market and I'm manning my booth on Saturdays...

    August 14, 2013

    • Judy L

Sorry Stefan, I'm not able to go Sunday as I have another commitment in the morning.
