Knob Mountain-Jeremys Run Lariat Hike (Rescheduled)

(Rescheduled from March 10 because of excessive snows and possible flooding in the Blue Ridge.) This will be a very strenuous 13.1-mile lariat (semi-circuit) hike, with about 2500 feet of elevation gain, through one of the most picturesque sections of Shenandoah National Park. Beginning from the Elkwallow picnic area on Skyline Drive in the northern section of SNP, we will first proceed to the ridge of Knob Mountain, where we'll stroll along the crest for a few miles. Next, we will drop rapidly down Knob Mountain with some outstanding views to Jeremys Run, where we may lunch by a relaxing pool. Our gradual uphill back to Skyline Drive along the Jeremys Run Trail trail will be a serene and scenic ascent, featuring not only more than a dozen stream crossings, but also numerous pools, cascades, rock outcrops and glens. Bring a bag lunch, water, and a change of shoes/socks. Trip costs should be around $16, covering Park admission, transportation and the trip fee. Meet at the East Falls Church Metro Kiss and Ride Lot by 8:30 am; note the early meeting time. We will plan to leave as close to 8:30 am as possible.

Hey guys just an FYI- with all of the fun we had I did find a Deer Tick attached to my side this morning! My first attachment so my cherry is popped, unfortunately because of my medical condition I probably will go on antibiotic treatment of doxaclycline for 20-30 days just as a pre-cautionary measure! Make sure you check your self for ticks carefully and since they are out early start using repellant! If you need me to check you for ticks send me a private message - gigiddy!

Looking at the webcam today, looks like it is all gone, but we might find a few stockpiles of leftover winter... but I doubt it.

All--looks like tomorrow's going to be another great hiking day tomorrow in SNP. The April showers have disappeared, leaving a good stretch of weather. Be ready for a hike of 2 seasons.. it's going to be chilly in the morning and the sun will quickly warm us up. We will make our traditional Sheetz stop for lunch. This trip could be a fun adventure with all the recent rain/snow.. so prepare to get a little wet or muddy with all of our stream crossings. Maybe a kayak might be an appropriate hiking accessory? (kidding) If the water is too high, we can detour. See you tomorrow morning!

Hey David! Great update. Can you indulge me on a few more details? How long is the drive there and what kind of boots do you recommend for such hikes that may involve stream crossings?
And what the heck is Sheetz? :-D

I'd like to be prepared next time a hike like this one is scheduled! Thanks,
      Jesse

Just one more note about tomorrow. I recommend extra socks/shoes/clothes for this hike. Nothing is worse than wet feet to make a hike feel longer than it actually is and give you blisters. Also, many seasoned hikers recommend against wearing cotton because it soaks up water and makes you feel wetter and colder, which could be a very bad thing. Just something to think about for the newer hikers. :o)

    Hi David,

Looking forward to the hike! Could I meet you at the trailhead? That would be easier for me than East Falls Church metro. If so, could you let me know when and where? Thanks!

Good advice, David. I have led expert Sierra Club hikes in Colorado for many years, so I'm definitely up for the challenge, but you may be right about "warming up" to this group. Let me think about it and get back to you, ok?

This looks like it might be an interesting hike with all the snow melt that has filled the streams of Shenandoah. If it's too high, we'll postpone again (sadly).

  • David Marshall J.

Hey everyone!! I'm sad because winter decided to show up at the last minute. I hate to postpone, but I'm going to reschedule this hike until April 6. Shenandoah NP received some decent snowfall totals yesterday and I haven't seen any news feeds from the park--they were without electricity. I'm pretty sure they won't be able to clear it all by Sunday without having residual icing issues because temperatures will be about 40F over the next few days and freezing overnight. That said, Jeremy's Run can also be a challenge with high water from snowmelt and the snow could make it make a long, wet trip. I want to maximize our enjoyment. Sorry!

    March 7, 2013

  • David Marshall J.

Hello fellow Adventurers- As you probably know by now, snow is in the forecast. Check back after 3pm on Saturday for an official update. It looks like Shenandoah NP may get up to a foot of snow, which would make getting there improbable. The Park Service does a great job of clearing the roads, but often ice causes Skyline Drive to close. If this trip does get cancelled, I'm looking for at Sat., April 6 for another try.

I'm sorry I was a no show last weekend -- I'd really like to make it this time. Before I RSVP, I have to check if the shuttle to the metro will still run thy Sunday before spring break.

C'mon, Dan, all the cool kids are doing it. :o) If your hiking legs are not ready, I recommend our Catoctin Mountain hike (11mi) in April and/or Bearfence Mountain (10mi), later this month.

      1 · March 3, 2013

    • Dan

I do love the cool kids David. I am going on the Catoictin. I will ser. ;)

      March 3, 2013

  • David Marshall J.

I highly recommend extra socks for this hike. Nothing is worse than wet feet to make a hike feel longer than it actually is. Also, this hike will be postponed in the event of lots of heavy rain preceding the hike--or a snow/ice event that closes Skyline Drive--so make sure you check back here often since the weather can be pretty funny this time of year.
