RESCHEDULED Cherry Blossoms Evening Hike

  • April 3, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • Waterfront Metro

We will meet at the top of the escalators at the Waterfront Metro and leave promptly at 6:00, since our remaining daylight will be limited.

TIP: If you are late, just head to the Tidal Basin and take the path clockwise around the Basin. Hopefully, you can pick us up among the throngs of other blossom peepers.

We will make a leisurely loop around the Tidal Basin, passing by the Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial and the MLK Jr. Memorial before finally returning to the Waterfront area, a walk of around 4 easy miles.

Afterward, dinner at one of the Waterfront restaurants will be an option.  Last year, we chose Pier 7.  Go to to see Pier 7's offerings.  Last year's dinner was roughly $20 for those who chose to attend, excluding alcohol.  Dinner costs may have changed since then, and are in addition to the Trip Fee for those who choose to participate after the hike.

Note that all of the trails are paved, and the pace is leisurely as noted above. Accordingly, come as-you-are from work. At least one car will be parked nearby to deposit briefcases, computer bags, a change of shoes, etc.

Surprised we missed you, Harris, especially since there weren't that many other people ambling along the Tidal Basin. What time did you get to the Waterfront Metro or the Tidal Basin?

Craig I figured out that I got completely turned around and headed towards Haines (?) Point. Doh!

Thanks to all who kept me company on our annual evening pilgrimage. The highlight of the trip for me, strangely enough, was noticing that the sidewalk along Maine Avenue near the railroad overpass has been much improved and widened. Glad we saw at least a *few* blossoms! Let's hope that the grandiose plans for the Waterfront don't completely destroy the charm of places like the Fish Market and the Channel Inn.

      Amen to all of that!

With such a fun group, who needs cherry blossoms? Enjoyed the return visit to the Tidal Basin and the dinner. Thanks Brett for organizing.

Glad I was finally to make one of these! It was cold for sure, but it was a nice group to hike with! Thanks Brett for organizing this!

I seem to have completely missed you guys in spite of my clockwise circumambulation of the basin. Enjoyed the workout but would have liked the company too.

Afraid we missed the paddleboat this year, as very few blossoms could be found along the Tidal Basin. The February-in-April weather, especially the biting wind, didn't help either. OTOH, we didn't need a machete this time to hack through the tourist hordes. The great company and a fine dinner afterwards at the Channel Inn made it all worthwhile. Thanks to Brett for organizing!

Great group of folks, and it was a lot of fun! The dinner was good too. All we needed was 10° warmer and a few more cherry blossoms.

Don't look for me--feeling a little under the weather.

Per the webcam, there doesn't seem to be many cherry blossoms. I think I'll wait -- hiked the tidal basin Sat.

Hi All! Things are looking good for blossoms! If you have not already let me know if you're planning to do dinner at Pier 7 and are able to do so, that would be great. Since there will be quite a few of us, I'd like to try to give the restaurant a headcount. Thanks and see you Wednesday! -b.

I think i'm going to have to pass on dinner. I'm really hoping to make it for the hike, but I might wimp out if I'm feeling too cold. :)

Sorry, another meeting is being held, and I do not think that the blossoms will be out anyway.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to miss this trip because of an urgent, new work project. Have a great time, and I hope to join y'all sometime soon.

Hello my fellow evening Cherry Blossom-peepers! I'm looking forward to an evening of beautiful blossoms - also, seeing the new MLK memorial, which I have not yet had a chance to see.

Note: There is a Washington Nationals home game scheduled for 4/3 at 7:05pm, which combined with the usual cherry blossom traffic, is likely to make driving/parking in the area frustrating to say the least. Taxis will also be affected. Best advise = metro.

A couple questions for the group:

    1) Do you have access to a parking space near the Waterfront Metro, and if so, could your vehicle be used to hold others' bags during our hike?

    2) Are you planning to dine at Pier 7 after our hike?

    March 24, 2013

    • Ralph W.

No parking spot - will Metro in. I am planning to join the dinner group.

      March 25, 2013

    • Randy

I'll definitely enjoy the dinner wherever the choice is; I don't have access to parking spot either.

Oh, and my March 3rd. I meant April 3rd ... global warming isn't that powerful ... yet!

    Hi All!

Greetings! I guess you got the word that our hike date has shifted from Wed March 27th to Wed March 3rd ... oh those fickle blossoms! Fortunately several of my Adventuring collegues closely monitor the Park Service's bloom forecast.

Frankly, I suspect we may be slightly past-peak on 4/3 ... but who am I to question the the National Park Service?!? Doesn't matter anyway; it will be beautiful urban stroll!

The challenge with this hike is to 1) take advantage of the thousands of great photo ops and 2) keep the group moving. I'm sure my sweetie will help us with that!

Looking forward to seeing you all on the 3rd! (Also, hoping you can join John and I on his Cherry Blossom hike; see the calendar item for 3/30).
