Center Point Knob-White Rocks (PA) Hike (Rescheduled)

(Postponed from February 11 by an unexpected outburst of winter.) This unusual trip takes us to the northern end of South Mountain in Pennsylvania. Starting from the charming Trail Town of Boiling Springs, we'll proceed south on the Appalachian Trail past scenic Children's Lake and through the farm fields of Cumberland Valley to the base of South Mountain. We'll then climb to Center Point Knob, so-called because this peak is near the middle of the entire AT. After reaching the summit and turning around at a nearby shelter, we'll pick our way through 550 million-year-old quartzite formations on the aptly-named White Rocks Trail back to the Valley. We'll complete our loop along little-used rural roads leading back to Boiling Springs. Total length of this moderate-to-strenuous circuit hike should not exceed 9 miles, with about 700 feet of elevation gain. Optional dinner in Gettysburg on the way home.  Bring beverages, lunch and about $20 for transportation and trip fees. Meet at 9 a.m.in the Kiss & Ride lot at the Forest Glen Metro Station; note the change from the original plan to meet at Grosvenor-Strathmore, which will be virtually inaccessible this weekend due to station closures on the western end of the Red Line. 18 Adventurers, including an unusually high number of folks from outside the DC area, enjoyed very comfortable early spring weather on this outing. Luckily, the Appalachian Trail on the farm fields we marched through on our way from Boiling Springs to the base of South Mountain was not muddy at all. The ascent to Center Point Knob was not especially steep or rocky, and we lunched at the top in the company of what appeared to be Michael Jackson's long-lost glove, apparently a treasured relic at that spot. We then descended another mile to the Kennedy Shelter, where we relaxed while hearing Adventuring war stories. On our return leg, we passed up the opportunity to take the White Rocks trail, both because our time was short and because some locals cautioned that the trail was quite rocky (as in big bouldery). After the hike, half of us repaired to Gettysburg for another delightful if health-food-free dinner at the Avenue Restaurant.
