Chain Bridge-Key Bridge Circuit Hike

You can't beat this 9-mile hike for its ease of access and great scenery right here in town. We'll start near Theodore Roosevelt Island (a short walk from the Rosslyn Metro station), follow the Potomac Heritage Trail along the south side of the Potomac, cross the river at Chain Bridge and then take the C&O Canal Towpath to Georgetown. From Georgetown we cross Key Bridge to return to Roosevelt Island. There are some challenging sections of the hike, such as the rock scramble over jagged rocks after Donaldson Run and a few steep ascents and descents, but the second part of the hike on the towpath couldn't be easier. You can read a very detailed description of this hike with photos on pages 4-5 of the PATC's January 2011 newsletter by clicking on the "January 2011" PDF link on this web page: http://www.patc.net/PublicView/Custom/Newsl... . We'll meet in the parking lot for Roosevelt Island at the bottom of the ramp for the pedestrian bridge over the Parkway.  The entrance to the parking lot can only be accessed from the northbound side of the GW Parkway.  The entrance is roughly halfway between the Roosevelt and Key Bridges.  Bring water and a snack or lunch. The only cost will be the usual $2 trip fee. If you're planning to come please contact me by email, [masked]; Meetup RSVP; or phone [masked] so I can tell you the exact meeting place and so that I have a way to contact you in case bad weather requires me to reschedule the trip.

    Deb,

Dogs are o.k. as along as they're on leashes.

Well I found the parking. Two hour minimum. Any suggestions for nearby parking?

It appears that the two hour maximum parking limit is not vigorously enforced, at least at this time of year. I don't believe anyone's car had been ticketed when we returned 5 1/2 hours later.

And Jerry, let me tell you how happy I am they didn't enforce it lol - first thing I did was look on the windshield. I was seriously concerned about it =) Next time I will park at the Carrolton station and take metro to Rosylyn I think.

Following up on Ham's comment below, no, we didn't turn back. We followed the trail up to Glebe Road, crossed Chain Bridge, and then walked down the C&O Canal towpath to Key Bridge where we crossed back into Virginia as planned. I like for everyone to hike at a pace that he or she is comfortable with, but the downside of that is that if you get ahead of the trip leader you may get lost or miss part of the hike. Sorry you missed the other half of the hike, Ham! Thanks to Ham and Rob for their photos, and a special thanks to Peter for serving as "sweep" on the hike.

Great hike-enjoyed lunch at Fletchers Boat House.

Excellent hike - just enough rocks to climb/traverse over with enough easy spots to relax.

Enjoyed the area, first time hiking there. Group was a little spread out, and 4 of us ended up going as far as chain bridge - then backtracked - we assume the rest of the group turned back.

Good hike. Nice that Adventuring was able to arrange for such fine weather. Only sorry that there wasn't a Starbucks at Chain Bridge or, better, someone serving mulled claret.
