Bull Run Mountain Hike

(Revised 2/24.) Hiking at Thoroughfare Gap, where I-66, the railroad and Broad Run all slice through the Bull Run Mountains near Haymarket, VA, takes you into an area well worth exploring for both its human and natural history.  The scenic highlight of our moderate trek, which will not exceed 5 miles and 500 feet of elevation gain, will be the dramatic White Rocks overlook, which became legally accessible only a few months ago. We'll also see the ruins of the old Beverly Mill (the one you glimpse as you speed by on I-66) and the site of a critical engagement during the Second Manassas Campaign of August 1862. Bring beverages, lunch, and about $12 to cover transportation and trip fees and a donation to the Bull Run Mountain Conservancy.  Leashed pets are allowed. We'll carpool at 10 a.m. (note the languidly late starting time) from the East Falls Church Metro Kiss & Ride lot, and we will return by mid- or late afternoon.  For further information, contact Craig, [masked], or: [masked].

Fourteen Adventurers enjoyed a fine late winter/early spring day along with dozens of others on Bull Run Mountain. Because recent rains had turned valley or streamside trails into muddy quagmires, we stuck to the higher ground as much as possible. Lunch at the outstanding overlook atop the mountain was a bit hurried because this was the only place where the winds were too strong and blustery to be comfortable. Our return leg had several historic sites of unusual interest, including the trench of an old quarry where Rebels and Yanks fired point-blank at each other, the well-kept Chapman family cemetery, the ruins of the old Chapman family estate Meadowlands, and a view looking down on the ruins of Chapman's Mill. Just as we thought we were finished, we discovered we could walk directly to and even into the mill ruins. This was a very impressive sight indeed, complete with comfy benches built and installed by a local bunch of Explorer Scouts.
