Bear Church Rock Hike

Last September's Adventuring trip to picturesque Bear Church Rock in the heart of Shenandoah National Park took the 'easy' way, starting from Skyline Drive.  This time, we'll start from the base of the Blue Ridge and climb a mountain to reach our destination.  Our strenuous 9-mile round-trip hike starts in the bucolic Rapidan River valley and ascends 2200 feet up Jones Mountain for a stunning view of nearby valleys and mountains, including Old Rag.   Though the view alone is worth the climb, it won't be easy going, making this a perfect challenge for the not-so-humid winter months.  Many hikers call Bear Church Rock, which features a natural granite viewing platform miles from any sign of civilization, one of Shenandoah's hidden gems.   Bring weather-appropriate clothing (layers), water, sturdy boots, lunch and about $16 for transportation and trip fees.   Meet at 8:30 a.m. (please note the early time) in the East Falls Church Metro Kiss & Ride lot. Contact David if you have any questions: [masked], or: [masked].

What a nice day for a hike. The climb up to Bear Church Rock was beautifully steep, and the view was definitely worth it! What a great group of folks to spend the day with, and big thanks to David for leading! Look forward to more strenuous hikes like this one from Adventuring =]

I'd like to meet you at the Park. Any particular location?

    February 13, 2013

    • David Marshall J.

Debora, we aren't meeting inside the park. The park entrances aren't nearby to our hike. I can still send you directions if you want to meet us at the trailhead. Shoot me an email, [masked] and I can respond and attach the directions.

    Hi David,

I haven't done much hiking so I do have some concerns. I did the Little Devil's Stairs last Sat and found the first 2 miles of steep climb really stressed out my lungs. I see that Bear Church is rated more difficult with a higher elevation gain. Is it a sharp gain or a gradual gain?
I will be doing Old Rag next week and I'm optimistic that it will get me even in better shape to take on Bear Church. Thanks!

Thanks, David. I will know more after my hike this Sunday. Just for comparison, there's the fast and furious climb on LDS. If asked, I would not hike LDS anytime soon.

Hello everyone! Our BCR hike is a few weeks away. I noticed we have a few newer members with whom I have not hiked. Firstly, welcome to Adventuring! Secondly, I wanted to give everyone fair warning that this isn't an easy hike. My intention is not to scare you off, since I believe anything is possible, but depending on how much hiking you have done recently, it may be challenging due to the climb up out of the river valley. Some of the steepest climbs in Shenandoah are from the bottom of the park going upwards. Check it out: www.hikingupward.com/SNP/BearChurchRock/images/bcr_3d.jpg
That being said, don't worry, we'll take a breaks, we don't have to finish the hike in an hour. :o) I love mountain vistas, and this hike is definitely worth the challenge. More to come later. Have a great day!

I promise we won't be setting any land speed records, so I'm sure you can keep up, but you might want to wear something more sturdy for ankle support :)
