Gambrill State Park (MD) Hike

Here’s a lovely half-day hike near Frederick, MD to stretch your legs before beginning another long week. At the Gambrill State Park, we will follow a series of trails where we will be able to enjoy the beauty of Catoctin Mountain and admire its greenstone outcrops. We’ll also take in an expansive view of the Maryland countryside from the North Frederick Overlook, with more open vistas than usual because the trees are still bare. This will be a moderate loop hike of 7.4 miles with some elevation changes over rolling terrain and well-graded though sometimes rocky trails. Bring beverages, lunch, winter-worthy footwear, layers, and about $7 for transportation and trip fees. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro Station to form carpools.

15 Adventurers enjoyed a hike in Gambrill State Park that was full of surprises. First there was the surprise of new perspectives. We usually hike the park in June (to see the blooming mountain laurel), but Gambrill in February looked completely different. Second, there was the joy of hiking a trail that had not been on the Adventuring itinerary before (but will be in the future). Third, the trail turned out to be steeper and longer than described in the guidebook so the advertised relaxing stroll turned out to be quite a workout. After the hike, 12 of us made our way to a delightful café in Middletown called the Main Cup, which will also be on the Adventuring itinerary for future trips in the area.

It's always a pleasure when I am introduced to trails I've never hiked before, and Jeff did that very nicely today. These new trails (principally the Catoctin Trail) proved their worthiness by unexpectedly heading up and down far more than expected. Unending muddiness and chilly temperatures just added to our challenges, which we all surmounted in fine fashion. Took us 4 hours to complete the hike, and I suspect that means we did more than the 7.5 miles advertised via

Does anyone have an estimated time we'll be back?

    February 23, 2013

    • Jeff H.

Hi Keith. That's always hard to predict based on how fast or how slow the group wants to go (and it looks like it's going to be a relatively large group so the pace may be on the slow side). Assuming you don't want to go to the Main Cup afterwards, I'd say you should be back at Grosvenor by mid-afternoon.

We’re still a few days away, but the weather looks like it’s going to similar to what it is in DC today (Thursday) – sunny, cool (around 40) and windy. There is rain predicted on Saturday so the trails will probably be pretty muddy so be sure to wear some sturdy boots.

One of our hikers made the excellent suggestion that we stop at the Main Cup in Middletown afterwards. It looks like a great place to get coffee, tea, and/or a snack in a picturesque and historic location so we’ll make it an optional stop after completing the hike.

For those who want to meet at the trailhead, please get there between 10 and 10:15. Directions to the particular parking lot we’re meeting in are a little tricky so if you want to meet at the trailhead, just email me and I’ll email back the directions.

Finally, if your plans have changed and you can't make the hike, please email me or change your Meetup RSVP to "no." I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday! Jeff

For those of us coming to Grosvenor-Strathmore by Metro, be aware that they will be single-tracking between Friendship Heights and Van Ness; allow an extra 20 minutes, they warn. For full details on this and other inconveniences this weekend, visit:
