This hike parallels approximately three miles of Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, MD as experienced during our tubing adventures. We’ll be walking on mostly level though possibly muddy trails maintained by the National Park Service. The total length of this moderate loop is nine miles.
The hike will begin at the Antietam National Battlefield Visitors Center. Since this hike focuses on the natural beauty of the area, we'll linger at the Visitors Center a few minutes while those interested in Civil War history take a quick look at the overview materials provided by the Park Service. The rest of us can get a sneak peak of the terrain that we will be seeing.
The first half of our day will feature five historic farm houses and a walk along the Creek. For the second half of our journey after lunch, we will rejoin the Creek, continue our walk down past the beautiful (and original) Burnside Bridge and explore trails through the lower fields and historic sites.
We’ll carpool at 9 a.m. from the Shady Grove Metro Station. We'll rendezvous inside by the station attendant's kiosk. Drivers should use the Kiss & Ride lot at the end of I-370 off of I-270. Carpools will stop at a Sheetz for any last-minute amenities before continuing on to Antietam.
If you will be using Adventuring's carpools, please bring $6 to offset your driver's gas expenses for the 97-mile round trip. If you can be a driver, please let the trip leader know as soon as possible. Adventurers meeting us at the Visitors Center should arrive no later than 10:30 AM.
Bring beverages, lunch, mud-worthy boots, $4 for park admission and $2 for the Adventuring trip fee.
