C&O Canal @Georgetown Hike

Say good-bye to Eastern Standard Time with this semi-rural hike in the heart of town. Starting from the Dupont Circle Metro, we'll head down Rock Creek to pick up the historic C&O Canal near Milepost Zero. We'll then stroll along the towpath past several locks, surrounded by old warehouses and industrial sites long since converted into luxury homes, offices and retail. After Key Bridge we'll continue through a forested landscape to Fletcher's Boathouse, where we'll lunch next to the Potomac. Our return leg will take us along Reservoir Road and R Street. Total length of this easy-to-moderate circuit hike will be about 8 miles, with a few hills to negotiate after lunch. Bring beverages, lunch and the $2 trip fee. Meet at 10 a.m. by the elevator for the Dupont Circle Metro Station facing CT Avenue below Q Street NW.

A chilly morning gradually evolved into a gorgeous afternoon for 21 Adventurers, including a great many first-timers. As we strolled the Canal towpath in Georgetown, we wondered why there seemed to be so few others out with us. By the time we got to the Key Bridge area, we had our answer: The towpath upstream from there was swamped with participants in the Georgetown Ten-Miler. A Park Ranger overheard our discussion of the mysterious disappearance of Francis Scott Key's house and then informed us that Key Bridge is sometimes referred to as the "Car-Strangled Spanner." We had a relaxing lunch on the picnic tables and rocks at Fletchers Cove. Our return leg through Georgetown Heights was punctuated by many stops to discuss points of historical interest, especially at Oak Hill Cemetery and the adjacent Evermay estate. We finished at Dupont Circle half an hour ahead of schedule, indicating we kept up a brisk pace throughout our 8-mile walk.

Do you have a suggestion for parking near Dupont Circle?

I park at Forest Glen (the station before Silver Spring). The Parking is free on Wkends. However, I come from Baltimore, so it's not really out of my way.

    Good evening, Adventurers!

Weather should be much improved over this (hopefully) last gasp of winter we've had to endure the past few days, mainly because the blustery winds should be calming down. Dress in layers. You would think the gusty winds would have dried up any mud puddles along the towpath by now, but be prepared with good footwear or boots just in case.

Remember to bring your own lunch and beverages with you when we meet by the Dupont Circle Metro elevator Saturday morning at 10. As the traditional American folk song goes: "In Georgetown There Is No Sheetz."

My very rough estimate is that we'll be back at Dupont Circle Metro around 3, but don't bet on it. There could be a lot of Dynamic Lollygagging (TM) along the way, especially if I lapse into my Licensed Tour Guide mode on our return walk along R Street. There are buses from Georgetown towards the Circle for anyone who gets antsy.

Debora and Theresa (and Sam), they will be single-tracking all weekend on that end of the Red Line. Give yourselves an extra 15 minutes at least, so leave Silver Spring by 9:15 at the latest (or Forest Glen by 9:10).

You're asking the wrong person, Debora, since I don't drive. Just give yourself plenty of extra time to find a place or a lot.
