Perseids Meteor Shower Night Ride

GREETINGS ADVENTURISTS!

The Perseids Meteor Shower is back for its annual light show and tonight, Aug 10, is the night it peaks.

Once again we will enjoy a rare night ride to the darkest place we can find to enjoy some optimal meteor viewing. (Hopefully this year without the house music soundtrack!).

THE ROUTE: http://goo.gl/maps/Nc2st

After the success of our "Howling at the Supermoon" ride we will be repeating that route only this time going a but further. Past Newcomb's Ranch, to one of the scenic overlooks with an unobstructed view of the sky.

The best meteor viewing is from midnight to 5am in the northeast sky so we will meet at 10:00pm and roll out at 10:30pm to arrive at our destination near midnight. With (hopefully) a clear view of the night sky, we'll hang out ooohing and aaahing for an hour or so and then head back to civilization.

Needless to say, since we will be riding at night on twisty, dark, mountain roads, this will be a challenging ride and we will be as slow and cautious as needed.

!! NOTICE !!

This is a night ride through unlit twisty mountain roads and is serious stuff. There could be rocks and who knows what else to deal with. Make sure you fully understand what you are getting in to before attending this ride. If you have never ridden these roads in the daylight before, do not try it at night!

RIDE PREPARATION

Make sure your headlight is both working and correctly aimed. And absolutely for sure make certain your scooter is in perfect working condition. You don't want to break down in the mountains at night.

REQUIRED GEAR

Reflective safety gear is an absolute must!
(Please read that sentence again.)

You can purchase reflective armbands for as little as $10 and a reflective vest for even less.

If you do not own reflective vest or reflective jacket (or more) please do not attend. Should the worst happen and you go off the road with no reflective gear chances are you won't be found until the sun comes up. So no joking around here.

Please bring a flash light just in case, as well as an emergency repair kit if you have one.

This is a high risk ride. Suitable armored, abrasion resistant gear is strongly recommended.

SUGGESTED GEAR / SUPPLIES

Bring extra layers of warm clothing (it is colder at altitude or in canyons), beverages, food, cameras, video, or what ever else you might like to bring for your viewing pleasure.

Spare gas should not be necessary but if you have a canister it is always better to be safe than sorry.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

If it turns out that the night of the 10th is overcast, the ride will be cancelled. Or if there is enough interest we can perhaps try again on the 11th.

THE SERIOUS STUFF

NIGHT RIDING IN THE MOUNTAINS IS SERIOUS RISKY BUSINESS. THIS IS NOT A RIDE FOR BEGINNERS, INTERMEDIATES, OR THE FAINT OF HEART. IF YOU HAVE NEVER NAVIGATED THIS ROUTE IN THE DAYLIGHT DO NOT COME ON THIS RIDE. INEXPERIENCE IS NOT JUST A DANGER TO YOU, BUT TO THE WHOLE GROUP. THIS IS NO JOKE. PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN THESE CANYONS.

IF YOU ARE NOT EXPERIENCED AT NIGHT RIDING ON TWISTY, DEMANDING CANYON ROADS, IF YOU HAVE NOT SPENT CONSIDERABLE HOURS RIDING IN EXTREME MOUNTAIN CONDITIONS IN THE DAYLIGHT, AND IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE NECESSARY REFLECTIVE SAFETY GEAR, DO NOT COME ON THIS RIDE.

That said...

This will be an adventurous and exciting ride, topped off with a spectacular light show. Exactly the kind of fun we Adventurists like!

I look forward to seeing you all there.

Skootz / Justin

Great fun last night everyone! So nice to see so many stars! In the city it's easy to forget they are there! I haven't seen the Milky Way in quite some time. And the meteors didn't disappoint. Great ride (welcome to the group Terry!), a little chilly in spots coming home (in August? Really?), and as always great fun hanging with everyone. Special thanks to Mike (and Deb!!) for the amazing hot chocolate and homemade brownies. Soooo good! Those alone were worth the trip!

Where to next year? Joshua Tree???

I'm sorry but I am not feeling well. Nothing major, but I don't think I should go on this ride without feeling 100%. Have fun, see you next time.

Bummer. And I was going to bring a boom box just for you. After all, what is stargazing with out some obnoxiously loud house music? :)

The Perseids is at its best from the 11th - 13th. It will be great on all these nights. We'll be seeing early in the morning of the 11th. One plus of seeing on the earlier day is that the moon is newer so the sky will be darker thus more meteors will be seen. Also, most people have to work on Monday so a Sunday night ride is not possible for everyone. Any one of these days you are in for a great show.

Creeping Cataracts! I mean that literally. Night riding pretty much out until I get those fixed, and that comes after getting the REST of me fixed. Back home after 2 hour general anesthesia surgery on all my impacted sinus cavities this morning. We believe that condition was the trigger for other symptoms that put me in the ER twice in 6 weeks. So, hopefully, several things will be fixed. Hmmm. Maybe that calls for a new scoot instead of fixing the current one! :)

Jon! So nice to hear from you! I've wondered how you were doing. I am so sorry to hear of your travails! I hope you are on the mend and doing OK otherwise. We miss seeing you two! Between your headlight and your eyesight though, I can see why a night ride might have to be passed on for now :) Rest up and get well soon. And as for buying that new scooter, I'm here to help you with any additional rationalization needed! I'm pretty good at that :)
