Saturday, May 17 - Hike: Bald Butte

Want to do Dog Mountain but don’t want to deal with the crowds? Love wildflowers? Well, this is the hike for you. We’ll start at the Oak Ridge Trailhead and work our way up scenic Oak Ridge, passing hanging meadows and outstanding views of Mount Hood, towering over the Hood River Valley. When we hit the top of Surveyor Ridge we’ll turn left and hike out to the summit of Bald Butte, which features more outstanding views and (hopefully) fields of wildflowers. Plan on a stop for festive malted beverages after the hike, as we’ll be just uphill from Hood River. Hike: 8.4 miles out and back, 2,300 feet elevation gain. Drive: 140 miles RT. Meet at Gateway Transit Center, SE corner of the parking garage, 9 AM. Leader: Matt Reeder and Karl Langenwalter.

My photos are posted on facebook and google, for those interested. First time trying out the panorama function, and it worked pretty well.

I won't be driving...can someone please give me a ride? I'll have cash on hand for gas money.

It sounds as though there will be plenty if vehicles for rides - I'd like one too. However Matt if needed I can drive a different vehicle and be a chauffeur. Just let me know!

There will be plenty of people driving - we'll sort it out tomorrow morning at Gateway.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it due to very last minute family business to where I'm needed back on the east coast. But I'm in Portland for three more months for work so hopefully I'll be able to make the next hike! Enjoy!

The Sparkle Pony and its four doors will indeed be driving in all of its unfortunately-colored glory. But my car is headed-up to the Mazama Lodge afterwards. IPA party on Hood? I'm happy to take peeps.

Sorry, I'm confused. Is this 9-5? or 12-8? I don't want to show up too early or worse, too late!

It's going to be a 9AM meetup at Gateway. It will take about 80 minutes to drive to the trailhead, and the hike should take about 5-6 hours depending on the group speed. I plan on stopping at Pfriem in Hood River after the hike but that part of the day is not mandatory!

Holy smokes Batman! This is going to be a big group. Some things you'll need to know before you go this weekend:
    1) If you are planning for the weather, do not follow the Portland forecast - look up the weather for the town of Parkdale, which is only about 3 miles from our trail. Often it will be sunny over there when it is raining here. So far it looks good for Saturday but who knows. Similarly, bring a jacket, gloves and a hat - even if it is sunny, the winds are often very strong at the summit of Bald Butte. 2) Dogs are fine for this his, but part of the hike is popular with mountain bikers - we'll need to be very polite because we'll be sharing a segment of trail with people going much faster than us. 3) I'll work on organizing carpools here in the next couple of days. It's about an 80 minute drive to the trailhead, almost all of it on paved highway. Let's make sure we carpool as efficiently as possible!

    See you all Saturday.

Are we stopping for beer at a pub (indoor)? If so, I won't bring my dog since it's going to be hot on Saturday and I don't want to keep the dog inside the car while I have a cool beer.

Elle, the pub we're going to is indoors, but we may be able to sit outside. You may want to keep your dog at home, but we may be able to sit outside. Here's the pub: http://www.yelp.com/b...

    Did you all bump back the weekend? I thought I couldn't make it. But a Matt Reeder/Karl Langenwalter hike next weekend? How could I say "no?" ( ;

Matt is there a limit to the number of people on the hike? I would like to join if you can take one more.

Do we have an approximate ETA for when we will be back for this hike?

    April 30, 2014

    • matt

I would say more than likely between 5 and 6PM. The hike will take approximately 5 - 6 hours, but many of us will want to stop for beer after the hike. There are usually people who want to go directly back to Portland, so if you are crunched for time I'm sure you could head directly back.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
