WELCOME TO GUINEA!
Study djembe and dunun drumming in Africa with masters of the craft in a true cultural and musical immersion. The DrumConnection of Boston, MA is hosting an unforgettable journey to the birthplace of the djembe. In this three week trip you will study drum and dance, attend festivals and celebrations, learn about the country and its people, and discover the magic that is Africa. We will be based in Simbaya Gare, a village suburb of Conakry, the capital of Guinea. We will be guests at Famoudou Konate’s compound, where we will enjoy comfortable accommodations, exquisite African food, and the hospitality of the Guinean people.

Classes
Drumming classes will take place 5 days a week, and will include technique, traditional village rhythms, songs, ballet-style arrangements, as well as the cultural context of the rhythms.

Traditional Guinean dance classes will be offered regularly during our stay. We encourage all drumming students to take advantage of the opportunity to learn these dances. If you are interested in other African musical instruments, classes in balafon and Fula flute are also available. Language instruction is available depending on demand.

Food and Drink
Meals consist of traditional Guinean dishes such as rice with a variety of sauces and chicken, beef, goat, fish, and vegetables. Vegetarian meals and fresh fruit will also be available. Bottled water is highly recommended and available for purchase.

Leisure Time
Every 3-4 days there will be a free day for students to spend as they wish. Suggestions include further musical study on another instrument such as the balafon or flute, relaxing in the compound, shopping or day trips outside of the village.

Day Trips
Additional trips available and possible are as follows:
• Day trip to Kindia Market, famous for its fabric, indigo tie die, sculptures, baskets and beads.
• Day trip to Kassa ni Soro, where will spend a day on this beautiful paradise island.
• Day trip to Coyah, a beautiful, traditional African village (optional, scheduled depending on demand).
