We'll hike Green Mountain/Lakewood from a new trailhead for us, on the south side of the mountain on Alameda (see directions below). The difficulty will depend on the conditions, but the goal is to hike to the summit and back, which would be about 5 miles round trip and 950' of elevation gain. As this hike is longer than normal, no slow hikers please! This hike has great views of Denver and the city lights at night. The sun will set just before the hike starts—bring a headlamp. This time of year, you may need traction devices such as IceTrekkers or Micro Spikes.
After the hike, those interested will go to Moe's Original BBQ for dinner/drinks.
Please note the details about bringing appropriate gear and in case of bad weather in this Meetup Group's Welcome description. The weather is mercurial this time of year, so on the day of the hike if the weather is questionable be sure to check the website or call or email the leader (cell# will be sent to those who've RSVP'd) to confirm the hike is on. Dogs are welcome on this hike, but they must be on a leash and you must pick up after them. If you join this hike, you are agreeing to this waiver.
Directions: We're meeting at the trailhead on W. Alameda Parkway on the south side of Green Mountain. The trailhead is in-between where S. Indiana intersects from the south and west of the intersection of Alameda/Jewell/Bear Creek Blvd. Parking is on the south side of the street (there are actually a couple of parking lots next to each other—it doesn't matter which one you park in). Click here for directions.
My car was pelted too, right before getting to the trailhead. Turned around and drove home.
I went to the trailhead. I could not walk upright in the parking lot without the wind pushing me quickly eastbound. We were near where 90 MPH winds were recorded.
Hopefully no one else sustained damage to their vehicles. I got hit by a dusty wind gust right at the trailhead and it left me with over a dozen cracks on my new winship. Calling the rock chip repair guy today to hopefully save it but I think it's to late already.
I think a few of us had car damage. The wind was very severe. My car was a bit sand blasted on the pasenger side.
I don't think it was windy at all, but I just learned that my van can almost fly too loool had fun at dinner!!! :)
Hike is canceled due to the wind. I'll be at Moe's BBQ at 6pm if you want to meet us there. Sorry for the last-minute cancellation, but people already at the trailhead are saying the winds are picking up rocks and pelting their cars, so it is not safe to hike. Two hours ago, there was no wind--it's just gotten bad in the past hour or so.
