Green Mountain Full Moon After Work Hike & Dinner

NO SLOW HIKERS! Let's celebrate the last Friday, the last full moon, and the last after work hike of 2012 by hiking Green Mountain and then going to Union Brasserie (click on link for menu and prices) for dinner/drinks afterward. We'll hike from the Florida Lot doing a loop with great views of the city lights. The hike will be approximately 3-4 miles with 800' of elevation gain depending on conditions, and we'll hike on trails that we help build during our trail work days this year.

NO SLOW HIKERS! As long as it is not windy and you keep moving, you can keep warm hiking in the winter with temperatures in the 30s or 20s. However, waiting to regroup for slow hikers means standing around a long time, and that's when you get cold. So don't take it personally, but if you are slow hiker, please do NOT sign up for my hikes during the winter when it is really cold. Sorry, but it is just not practical to hike when it is below freezing and we have to spend a lot of time waiting to regroup.

Please note the details about bringing appropriate gear and in case of bad weather in this Meetup Group's Welcome description. The weather is mercurial this time of year, so on the day of the hike if the weather is questionable be sure to check the website or call or email the leader (cell# will be sent to those who've RSVP'd) to confirm the hike is on. You may need traction devices such as Micro Spikes. Bring a headlamp or a flashlight. Dogs are welcome on this hike, but they must be on a leash and you must pick up after them. If you join this hike, you are agreeing to this waiver.

Directions: We're meeting at the Florida Lot of Green Mountain/William Frederick Hayden Park, on the west side of W. Alameda Pkwy (across from W. Florida Dr.), about 1/4 mile north of the Alameda/Jewell intersection in Lakewood (do not go to the Utah Lot which is a little south of the Florida Lot). Click here for a Google map with directions.

I think we cover about 3.5 miles in 1.25 hours/4 miles in 1.5 hours. Walking about 2.4-3 MPH depending on terrain. I'm 57 and found it very challenging until I got into decent shape. Average age varies. Ed probably has the best estimate, but I'd say a range of early 30s-late 50s.

Donna, if it gelps we generally cover about 4 miles in around 2 hours, sometimes a bit more if theres snow.

So probably a stupid question but how fast is fast and how slow is slow as far as hiking? Just joined this group. What is the average age of a hiker in this group. I am 52

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. I snowboard all the time in single digit temps so weather is not my issue, I always say there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear. Sounds like you do an amazing job and this is a lot of work for you directing this group. Was just wondering about the general pace of the group. I just always hike alone or with a few friends and I do wait for most of them and I do understand that can get very chilly. Thanks again, Ciao, Donna

It's impossible to answer what is a fast versus slow pace, as what is fast for some people is slow for others, and vice versa. Compared to other hiking Meetups, some groups are faster, some slower than mine, so I say my pace is "moderate". We regroup periodically to make sure no-one gets lost, and waiting a long time for slow hikers is not practical in freezing temps.
