Three New After Work Hikes for April!

From: Ed W.
Sent on: Sunday, March 28, 2010 9:37 AM
Greetings After Work Hikers!

The weather is getting nicer and the sunlight is lasting longer. A high of 69 degrees is currently forecast for Monday?it should be a beautiful evening for our Mt. Falcon Sunset/Full Moon Rise After Work Hike & Dinner. All of our after work hikes have been so much fun, so I?ve schedule three more.

Each of these hikes below is special, and all have great views. I visited the Sherpa House Restaurant & Cultural Center recently for dinner (we?re going there after the Apex Trail hike), and found it to be a wonderful place with great food, nice decor, and friendly staff (most of whom really are Sherpas!) For the Deer Creek Canyon hike, we?ll be hiking to a summit with spectacular views of the city and the mountains, and the goal is to time it so as to watch the sunset from this summit. Finally, O?Fallon Park is a real gem of a hike that is actually in a forest, and likewise we?ll be targeting the hike so as to watch the sunset from a summit with beautiful views.

Apex Trail After Work Hike & Dinner
Tuesday, April 6, 6:15pm
We'll hike a loop from the Apex Trail, and then meet some Sherpas for dinner afterwards. The Apex Trail starts at Heritage Square parking lot in Golden, and includes some nice views of Apex Gulch and of the city once we get higher up. This hike is roughly 4 miles with 1000' of elevation gain. We'll watch the sunset (7:30pm) during the hike. Afterwards, those interested will go to the special Sherpa House Restaurant (click on link for details and menu) in downtown Golden for dinner/drinks.

Please note the details about bringing appropriate gear and in case of bad weather in this Meetup Group's Welcome description. In particular, be sure to bring rain gear, and dress appropriately remembering that it gets cooler after sunset. Dogs are welcome on the hike, but you must pick up after your dogs and they must be on a leash. If you sign up for this hike, you are agreeing to this waiver.

We'll be meeting at the far end of the lower parking lot (the first one to the right as you enter) at Heritage Square, 18301 W. Colfax Ave., in Golden, CO. Click here for a map with directions.

Deer Creek Canyon After Work Hike & Dinner
Wednesday, April 14, 6:00PM

We'll hike scenic Deer Creek Canyon Park (southwest of C470) up to a summit with a great view of the mountains to the west and the city to the east, and time it so that we watch the sunset from the summit. This hike is a little longer than most we've done: 6 miles with about 1100' of elevation gain. After the hike, those interested will go to the South China Restaurant nearby in Littleton (when we went there a few months ago, everyone loved it).

Click here for a map with directions. The easiest way to get there is, from C470, exit Wadsworth south, and immediately turn right/west onto Deer Creek Canyon Road. After 2 miles, you'll reach a Y in the road--veer left to stay on Deer Creek Canyon Road. After another mile you'll pass South Valley Park on the right, and about a mile after that you'll see a sign for Deer Creek Canyon Park. Turn left/south onto Grizzly Drive. You'll go up a winding road for about a quarter mile, and you'll see the sign and parking lot for Deer Creek Canyon Park on the right.

O'Fallon Park After Work Hike & Dinner
Thursday, April 22, 6:00PM

O'Fallon Park is a gem about 7 miles west of downtown Morrison off of C74. This hike actually takes us through a forested area, and sometimes you'll see deer or other wildlife on this hike. The hike will be about 4 miles with 920' of elevation gain, and about 3/4 the way through the hike we hike up to a summit with wonderful views of the mountains to the west, and watch the sunset from this vista. After the hike, those interested will go to the Bear Creek Tavern in Kittredge about 1/2 mile away.

Please note the details about bringing appropriate gear and in case of bad weather in this Meetup Group's Welcome! description. In particular, be sure to bring rain gear, and dress appropriately remembering that it gets cooler after sunset. Dogs are welcome on the hike, but you must pick up after your dogs and they must be on a leash. If you sign up for this hike, you are agreeing to this waiver.

For this hike, we will meet in Morrison and carpool to the trailhead. We will make appropriate carpooling arrangement for those staying for dinner and those wishing to return immediately after the hike. We are meeting at the parking lot across from the Conoco gas station at the northwest corner of C470 and Morrison Road. Click here for a map with directions.
