9 miles: Woodlawn Cemetery & Van Cortlandt Park

WARNING: There are no easy exits to drop out. Once we have gone a few miles, we are in the wilderness, and your only choices are to find your way back out the way we came (good luck -- you'll probably get lost) or continue on forward to the end.  Also, you MUST keep up with the group! If you straggle behind and get lost, it will be very hard to navigate and you could easily wind up walking 15 miles before you find a subway.  If you think you'll find a cab, be serious -- this is the boroughs.

The hike will end at a restaurant, which we should reach around 5pm.

Bear in mind that if I want to meet you, I'm stuck at the front so I'm powerless to talk with you unless you come up front with me.  So by all means, come up and join in the conversation.

We'll start at the Northmost stop on the "4" train ("Woodlawn Station"), at the bottom of the East stairwell. We'll start out with a swing through Woodlawn cemetery, then most of the walk will be through the beautiful wilderness of Van Cortlandt Park. Note that NO PHOTOGRAPHY is allowed in the cemetery, and we should keep off the grass.  We'll end near the northernmost stop on the "1" train at 6pm.

At one point we will be going 7 miles between bathroom breaks.

If you arrive by car, make plans for how you're going to get from the end back to the finish.  Hopstop recommends taking the BX9 bus from 242nd St & Broadway toward "West Farms", getting off at Jerome Ave, then taking the 4 subway North three stations back to Woodlawn.

WEAR LONG PANTS!!! One of the first trails we'll take in Van Cortlandt is totally overgrown with weeds, some of which are stinging plants. You really won't want to walk through there without your legs covered.

Attendance at this event is free, and all participants attend at their own risk. Everyone will be required to sign a release waiver that basically gives up any right whatsoever to sue, to the fullest extent possible by law. You can read the current draft of this waiver at

OK, the hike is on. The hourly forecast shows rain to be unlikely this afternoon.

Was the previous Bronx hike also 9 miles?

Sometimes it's only 7 miles, like if it starts to rain we skip this extra loop at the end.

That Sunday doesn't work for me, but I hope that at some point there will be a repeat; it sounds like a good hike.

Bill, this sounds like a kickass fun hike....just not for me. Although I have many miles of stamina in me, I don't have stamina about overgrown weeds replete with stinging plants and hydrating myself without a bathrom for 7 miles. I applaud and admire all attendees on this hike and I particularly give you plaudits for being Davy Crockett! :) Trade in your hat in the photo for a coonskin hat. LOL
