Against the New View Transition on March 10th Meetup

  • Mar 10, 2010 · 8:00 AM

Note: This is not a physical event.

March 10th is the date announced by Meetup.com CTO, Greg Whalin, that Meetup.com has chosen as the date to force all Meetup groups to use the new wiew.

This event was created as a reminder for all as to the date when the transition to the new view will be made by Meetup.com.

Create more events like this!!!! Great idea!! One every day!!! Rate them all 5 stars!!! Get the group on peoples radar!!! Anyone want to start a Facebook group about MeetUp customers unhappy with the new view? MeetUp HQ can't touch that.

This group deserves 5 stars... "Change" itself is not a bad thing; however, change from a more user-friendly format to a less workable format is. Just look at the statement above Rate The Meetup: "Ratings are anonymous, but written comments are publicly attributed to your name." tell me you can't see who rated what in this group: http://hiking.meetup.com/176/ Grrrrrrrrr...

I appreciate your gumption in organizing this and in your eloquent advocacy for us elsewhere on the Meetup site.

I am using my vote (* Awful) as a vote against the imposition of the unready new view. The group itself is a great coming together of those opposed to it.

It is really important that we stick together, if only to help each other through this horrible mess that has been shoved down our throats...

Terrible talking at the meeting, just terrible ;-). I thought the changeover was supposed to happen at 8 am EST? It's now 9.37 am EST and my groups still have the old view.

I have to admit... I laughed out loud when I got the "Rate the Meetup" email just now.

Hi Michaela, I can hardly see it -- it goes by so quick -- but I believe you. I can think of one possible other explanation... Meetup is definitely linked to Facebook now -- there's some way one's Meetup events can show up on Facebook. So we could be seeing the trace of the software that does that. (On the other hand, Meetup certainly seems to want to *be* like Facebook these days! So who knows.)

Ok, click on 'members' on this page, wait a few seconds, and then click on 'Home' at the top left. At the same time move your mouse around in that top left square with New York, NY and founding date.
At least half the time the connection runs over a facebook page, sometimes it says something with statistics or sometimes that ac.connect.facebook. I think meetup was bought by Facebook.
I'm dumm when it comes to technology, am I assuming correctly, or is there another explanation ?

It says something like.....ac.connect.facebook.....THat's all I can catch, it goes so quickly

I have 4 times now clicked onto this main page from another page, and at the same time moved my mouse around on the page on the left side somewhere. And on the bottom left where it shows the websites that it's trying to connect to, I've had 4 times now seen facebook......, before it rolls over to meetup and 'Done'.....Hm....

When you search for next week's meetups, they're shown in a radius of 5,10,25 miles from your search zip code. Subsequently, I would think that any meetup event set up in those zipcodes would show. You would just need to put an address in for the event. But maybe someone more technically savy knows more, I'm just assuming and you know what happens then ;-)

I don't believe I can target other zip codes outside of the main one that is listed in the group. Could someone verify this? However, Meetup.com is likely to label that type of activity as spamming.

Howard, excellent point. And what would keep Oryx from posting events in zipcodes of other major cities? Wouldn't it then show up in their weekly events forecast?

And what kind of activity did they count? If people had to do extra clicking on various pages to get info about past or future events, then that constitutes more activity, but it's misleading and not a fair comparison.

At first I thought that this non event would serve no purpose, but then I thought this may be listed as an event in New York's Meetup. Will it be listed with the New York events for this week? If so then the more signing up the better.

It may not be a physical event, but it does give us the chance to type comments in "post comment" boxes :)

One of the features missing, is the feature that individual members can control who sees their rsvps. With the new feeds feature, when you rsvp - it goes into the feed and everyone can see it, regardless of if your groups are set to private. This is a serious privacy issue. Also now you can see both sides of greetings and replys to other members posted side by side on your site, thereby making even more public, exchanged greetings. A minor but still bothersome privacy issue also.

The more I look at the new layout, the less I'm bothered by it. I think at first they did not have the option of showing previous meetups, but they have changed that, it is now a module that you can activate.

Thank you Oryx!! This revamping is a waste!

Sorry for the confusion everyone! This is not a physical event, it is only on the calendar to serve as a reminder of the date when the transition to the new view will be made by Meetup.com.
