Agile Denver Kanban SIG: is a forum for those interested in learning with others about applying lean and agile principles along with pull/kanban system concepts to assist with catalyzing and managing change to improve their business workflow processes. It is a special interest group (SIG) of the Agile Denver group, and is also loosely associated with the global Limited WIP Society and Lean Systems Society groups.

Hi All,

Our July 2014 SIG meeting is scheduled for Thursday July 10. Dan Fritzler and Comcast have graciously volunteered to host our July SIG mtg. Thanks Dan!!

There is a Comcast sign outside of the building. Attendees will need to come to the front of the building, go inside and use the phone to call security (you can see security at their desk, straight in front of you when using the phone). Let the security attendant know you are attending the the Agile Denver Kanban SIG meeting in the Lady Bell Mine meeting room. Security will let you know how to get there.

Also, please add a comment identifying a “deep dive topic” you’d like to have the group discuss during our 1st hour (ex. could be recent/current book or article you’ve read or are reading related to lean, kanban, pull systems, a specific challenge or question you’d like to discuss with the group, etc.). We’ll then continue using a “lean coffee” format for the 2nd hour of our meeting to do some quicker hits in a JIT (just-in-time) manner on a number of other topics of interest to those attending.

Thanks again to Dan Fritzler/Comcast for hosting last night’s Agile Denver Kanban SIG meeting. It was great to see many new and familiar faces and the conversation was stimulating and informative.

Our deep dive, “Best Practices for “new” Kanban teams”, covered a range of practices and techniques that can be used with Kanban teams within the context of 2 primary sub-topics:
    • How to do planning, especially JIT.
    • Handling interrupts (unplanned work)
Thanks to Mark Bittner for driving the deep dive by having the courage to expose the challenges he is facing.

We had great flow during our 45 minute Lean Coffee which covered:
    • Measurement & Estimation Graphs/Visibility & Metrics/”Dan’s alternative to CFD” (see Frank Vega’s post A Few Basic Ways to Visualize Story Lead Time Predictability for more info)
    • Walk the Board – How to keep it from being a status report
    • Techniques for demand analysis
    • Kaizen – Instilling the practice of continuous improvement

Agreed on Mark's courage. We talked about that in our standup today. Way to go Mark!

My suggestion for a deep dive topic is scaling Kanban for larger teams

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
