Software Design in the 21st Century

In the last decade or so we've seen a number of new ideas added to the mix to help us effectively design our software. Patterns help us capture the solutions and rationale for using them. Refactoring allows us to alter the design of a system after the code is written. Agile methods, in particular Extreme Programming, give us a highly iterative and evolutionary approach which is particularly well suited to changing requirements and environments. Martin Fowler has been a leading voice in these techniques and will talk about his recent thinking about how these and other developments affect our software development.

Andrew HerbertEntertaining talks by Martin Fowler, but didn't break much new ground. The continuous delivery talk was a nice progression on the thinking behind continuous integration.

Salman JamalThe event started 35 minutes late. Hence I was only able to stay for the 1st session. It will be great if the total duration is also mentioned in the meetup invite.

Amy Jo+1 guestI left after the 1st 'chat', as it wasn't what I thought it was going to be about, plus I was disapointed that the speakers 'couldn't make it'. The speaker was uninteresting & should have announced at the start of his talk what his 3 topics would be about, i.e; 1/. Coding (20mins) 2/. xxx (20mins) 3/. xxx (20mins) A format would help people better manage thier expectations of the night, especially since there seemed to be a great difference between what was advertised and what it actually was.

Ashley ManosBrilliant. Loved the 3 x 20 min presentation format. Would've preferred for him to announce the topics in advance though, and also given that we were running late, not to have quite such long breaks between presentations.
Overall though, a very good night.
