Resistance to Scrum (Jon McNestrie - Development Manager at JHC)

One of the key things in getting Scrum (or any agile methodology) working for your team is overcoming resistance, often from senior management. We've all heard the likes of "You just want to be able to de-scope work" and "I need dates". During this talk we'll discuss some of the common objections and how to tackle them.

Lean Coffee

Lean Coffee ( )is a way of facilitating a good discussion without having an agenda before hand. We should (hopefully!) have a wealth of experience of agile development in the room. Let's share some knowledge and experience with a discussion about whatever agile topics or questions people are most interested in.

The meet-up will happen at Clavering House near to Central Station in Newcastle. You'll find it through the railway arch and on the left. We'll be on the second floor (no step free access I'm afraid).

It was good, well planned and great discussion. The only think I may think, is to add a short intro session in the beginning (where everyone gives a bit of intro about them i.e. what they do etc), obviously subject to the no of attendees.

Thanks Pardeep. Totally meant to do that. I think we were so relieved some people had come that we forgot. ☺

A good way to start a new group, two extremely enthusiastic organisers in Jon and Leigh, who bring a wealth of agile experience to the table and are open to learning too. The slides were well put together on agile resistance. I'm looking forward to May's session to learn more on how we can adapt Agile to suit the working environment and constraints.

As a little plug, for those interested in carrying out estimating using planning poker cards then I supply them at If you use the code ANE I'll post them out free of charge. Thanks Jon and Leigh

Thanks everyone. I really enjoyed it too and am looking forward to the next one.

    My slides are here:

in case anyone happens to want them.

Thanks again to everyone for coming.

I really enjoyed the evening, for an agile novice like myself it was really great to meet people who are obviously very passionate about the subject area. In particular I thought the Lean Coffee worked really well, i'm sure that could fill a whole evening with that activity alone. My only disappointment was that my evening schedule didn't permit a trip to the pub !
Thanks Jon and Leigh, see you at the next one (just a shame it's two months away).

Really enjoyed it and it's good to hear other people struggle with the same problems in their teams. Well done Jon and Leigh.

I'm really sorry but something has come up and I will be unable to attend. However I will try to make the next one.

We'll be starting a little after 6:30pm, feel free to show up a few minutes before to say hello.

The venue details are on the meet up page. You'll need to go through the railway arch next to the 'Herb Garden' restaurant and Clavering House is on the left. Come on in and you'll find us up the stairs on the second floor. We'll have some soft drinks and snacks.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there.
