Using Agile and Lean at portfolio level & Building a learning platform at speed

  • November 14, 2013 · 6:30 PM

For this evenings talk, we will be hosting 2 great speakers Emily Webber, from GDS, and Simon Pearson from FutureLearn, to speak on the following :

Using Agile and Lean at portfolio level

In this session, Emily Webber will talk about scaling up using agile and lean techniques, using Government Digital Service (GDS) as an example.

She’ll look at how GDS took learnings from managing projects and programmes using agile and lean techniques and translated them to the portfolio framework across an organisation of 300 people: what forums and decisions points they adopted, how they managed and measured workflow as well as how the team did it and what they learnt along the way.

Building a learning platform at speed

Simon Pearson is a Product Manager at FutureLearn, the new online learning platform initiated by the Open University. Simon has worked in publishing, broadcasting, advertising, physical products and now education. He will speak about how to build a learning platform at breakneck speed, and and make the social web and pedagogy play well together.

Simon posed a question about UX in an agile environment.

At the extreme Lean of agile UX there's people like Will Evans:

    Less extreme are Clearleft

and here's a example from Auntie where the UX lead took the approach of designing in-browser:

Someone asked about how GDS deal transitioning more traditional departments. Sarah Richards, Meri Williams and Neil Williams occasionally touch on this topic in the talks they give:

That's great Craig, thanks a lot for this. I'm terribly sorry I have drop out again; I'm missing really good discussions. I need to stop working with the US - they keep me hostage :(

I'm so sorry I can't make it today after all, and it is so interesting... I hope to be able to attend more lean-in-reality events in the future, thanks for organising! I went to one of your events last week and it was very good.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
