Savor the Views and Wines of Monte Bello OSP

Savor the Views and Wines of Monte Bello Open Space Preserve

Italian for “beautiful mountain,” Monte Bello Open Space Preserve (OSP) is a place of rolling grasslands, dense creekside forests, and spectacular vistas. The preserve is one of the District’s richest in wildlife and ecosystem diversity.

Enjoy a moderate hike (8+ miles roundtrip) while savoring the views of the Santa Clara Valley, conversation with like-minded explorers, and a luxurious picnic with the fabulous Ridge Wine.

No minimum age limit.

The Plan:

Park and meet at the Monte Bello OSP's main entrance (Google maps these coordinates:[masked],[masked]) on Page Mill Road, 7 miles west of Highway 280 and 1.5 miles east of Skyline Boulevard. Parking is available for 45 cars. Additional parking is available at the Los Trancos Open Space Preserve parking area, located directly across Page Mill Road.

Permit:

A permit of $2 per person is required.  Allow yourself at least 2 business days to get this processed.

Logistics:

Gather in the lot by the trail entrance with the posted maps at 8:45am and depart at 9:00am. If you’re late, you can meet us at Ridge as we’ll spend about 2 hours there for wine tasting.  We’ll be back to the cars by around 3:00pm, depending on the pace.

Route:

We’ll take the Canyon Trail, to the Bella Vista Trail, and then continue onto Monte Bello Road towards Ridge Vineyard. Be prepared and in good enough physical condition to do the 4+ miles each way, on a moderate trail which is equally as flat as it is hilly.

What to Bring:

• Lunch + Food to share (wine, bread, crackers, dips, fruits, etc.)

• Plenty of water

• Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm)

• Proper foot gear

• Driver’s License for proof of age

• Credit card or cash (tasting fees range from $5 to $20)

Ridge Vineyard

First planted in the late 19th century, the Monte Bello property has long been one of the most storied viticultural sites in all of California's vast wine country, and its signature offering, the Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello, is one of the most highly-regarded wines in the world. Nestled high up in the northern reaches of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and surrounded by these historic vineyards, our Monte Bello Tasting Room offers guests an un-paralleled opportunity to experience our exceptional single-vineyard wines.

Folks - just FYI. If you come up Page Mill road, the monte bello parking lot is on the left hand side. You will see a sign indicating that. (It is an amazing drive today, since you get above the cloud line in the valley)

    Dear Diary,

    Kari whines about her ankle.

Meanwhile, Kari still enjoys her wine.

I've applied for a hiking permit for upto 15 people. We don't need a parking permit for the parking lot (off page mill road) that we'll be starting for.

Is the permit needed just for parking?

Is a 2nd permit needed for the hiking part? If so, do I get a 50% discount on it, if I hop on one foot?
