I have contacted Aiken County Parks & Rec about this and they would be welcoming to a group of photographers.

According to my research, there is going to be a moon in the sky on the night of the 3rd for the meteor shower. This usually does not bode well for viewing or photography. Would everyone like to try for another meteor shower later in the year???

I think it would be a good idea to reschedule. I don't know a lot about night sky photography so, I will take your word for it!! Thank you Shirley!!

Judy, this one is for January 3rd - the Quandrantid meteor shower. This Thursday is the Geminids. I think we'll have better luck this Thursday as there will be no moon.

I will also be going out to Boyd Pond on Thursday, December 13 to catch the Geminid meteor shower. This one starts a bit earlier in the evening - around 9 or 10 pm. They say this is the best meteor shower of the year.

If anyone would like to join me, just let me know. I won't be going up to the observatory itself, but an area called the "pit"...a large sandy area that has trees for foreground. Here's more info on the Geminid meteor shower:
    Radiant: constellation Gemini
    Peak Activity: Dec. 13-14, 2012
Peak Activity Meteor Count: Approximately 120 meteors per hr
Velocity: 22 miles (35 kilometers) per sec
Note: The Geminids are typically one of the best, and most reliable, of the annual meteor showers. This year's peak falls perfectly with a new moon, guaranteeing a dark sky for the show in the nights on either side of the peak date. This shower is considered one of the best opportunities for younger viewers because the show gets going around 9 or 10 p.m.

I went out to Boyd Pond early (incredibly early, actually) to try to photograph some of the leonid meteors. Unfortunately, only saw about 12 or so in 3 hours. However, I did get some neat star trails. Here's a 30 minute exposure at iso 200, 20 mm, f5.6 at about 4am this morning.

This will be a great location for this type of photography as there will be interesting things in the foreground (trees, a nice pond)

Sounds good, but I'm going to have to pass this one up. I don't have fast enough glass.

Here's a website with some tips on night sky and star photography:

    http://www.steves-digicams.com/knowledge-center/how-tos/digital-photography-101-how-to-photograph-meteor-showers.html

I have never done this type of photography either! But we have time for a bit of research.

I would recommend a tripod, shutter release, extra batteries, and a flashlight. Definitely a warm coat, gloves, and hot tea / coffee in a thermos :)

There is plenty of parking at Boyd Observatory. The observatory itself is on a hill, so it is above most everything else in the area. It is also quite dark out there. This should make a great vantage point for us.

As a courtesty, all flash lights should have a red lens, so night vision is not hurt for you and others. To make mind, I bout a thin plastic notebook at Staples and cut out a red lens from the cover.

Dress warmly, hats, gloves and warm socks especially. It gets COLD doint astrophotography. Then have fun.
