Photo assignments - Shadows & Reflections (Self-directed)

  • Sep 21, 2013 · 8:00 AM

A Photographic Assignment is intended to help you develop your image making 'eye'.

You can take photos anywhere in the Bay Area - in fact if you are pushed for time, a good technique is to explore your own neighborhood to complete the assignment WHILE LOOKING WITH A 'FRESH PAIR OF EYES'. Look at details as well as the bigger picture. Be imaginative. See differently!

Upload your best photos to the Meetup page so that all members may make comments and help you improve your photography. The favorite image gets free coffee at the next Meetup! Upload your images by the Monday after the Meetup.

This assignment is Shadows and Reflections, taken between 8AM and 5PM on the above date. The shadow or reflection doesn't have to be the main subject of the photo, but it should be at least a prominent feature.

Try to be creative in finding and photographing anything naturally containing assigned subject - remember the aim is to help improve your 'seeing'.

Nigh photography is probably my favorite. We once did a shoot at the Peace Lantern Festival in Berkeley and it was magical. Any night event with lights is fun to shoot.

As a result of this assignment I'm more aware of shadows and reflections whenever I'm out with my camera. Can we post additional photos of those here?

Don't see why not! I'd love to see more photos.

I was the one that suggested this assignment as it is one of my shooting passions. I am out of town and was not able to participate this time as I forgot my camera on my trip. I must say, that I truly enjoyed seeing everyone's photos! Wonderful, inspired and creative. Thanks so much!

That will teach you to double check your bags before you lock the door.

So sorry you didn't get to participate. I also suggested this topic, by using the Suggest a New Meetup link and providing the description, which then created the event. Magic! Hopefully other members will take advantage of this option, as I'm sure Graham and Michael wouldn't mind some assistance in the administration end of things.

Famous quote from somewhere: "I'm not an artist but an avid spectator of the art." ........Inspired by others......MY idols are Sebastian Salgado and Brett Weston. These photographers have been around way before digital and Adobe software came into the scene.....

Back in the sixties I took several photography classes taught in the evenings by John Collier, Jr. He was an anthropologist and ethnographic photographer who had worked for the FSA. When I knew him he was teaching at SF State. You can see some of his photos here:

    Hello All,
First time doing this assignment! How do we VOTE for our favorite image?? Anxiously waiting...

      yes. good question.

I'm a relative newbie with this group, but I don't think there is a vote. Personally, I'm glad we don't vote 'cause I would not be able to pick a fave ...probably have 6 of them.

I would have to agree this assignment project was fun, creative and new to me as well. I did have an open eye and did take "be imaginative" approach. I can't wait for the next photo assignment. Thank you!

I like being able to have fun and learn more about how to see what's around me.

I really appreciate all the comments people have been making about the various image uploads. I get the most out of these assignments by looking at the uploaded images I like the most, and thinking about how I would have composed the shot (assuming, of course, I would have even thought to take it!). More often than not, I would have approached it differently, in a way that would have made the image less effective. By doing this, I expand my approach to photography.

It was interesting to pursue images using a theme -- something I hadn't done before. People in the group have come up with some real gems. Thanks to Rhona and Graham for suggesting this and to everyone for sharing. Cheers!

I really like how these assignments work. Great idea and great choice of a theme. Looking forward to the next one!

My inspiration for suggesting this theme was Karen's photo from the Estuary meetup at the end of July. It's a shot of umbrellas reflecting in the water....if you haven't seen it, check it out (it's #49 in the uploads from that day). Hope Karen will be uploading some of her work from today.

Although most would say the rain wasn't bad except that was the time I had set aside to shoot! Love the assignment, just didn't allow myself enough time.

  • Tessa N.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to shoot today, as I ended up going out of town and was on the road most of the day. It's great to see everyone's photos, though!

Hi everyone! This is my first time participating in this kind of challenge. Can someone please confirm how this works? The assignment is to take photos between 8am to 5pm on Sept 21, then get together that evening to review them? Or do we upload them by Monday Sept 23rd and then everyone comments online?

Thanks Rhona and Eddie. I too am a big fan of shadows and reflections. Look forward to seeing how others use and interpret them!

Great info., questions everyone. Hi! I was just now able to get some reflections but no shadows since I came out with camera a tad bit late. Hope what I got is good enough. Cheers everyone!

This was one of my favorite themes. Had fun experience! When I commented "Good to see you all", I meant in spirit..
