An Introduction to the Tao Te Ching
John Frederick, Tao student
The Tao Te Ching, is a classic Chinese text and it’s name comes from the opening words of its two sections: dào "way," Chapter 1, and dé "virtue/power," Chapter 38, plus jīng classic. This text is comprised of 81 verses that teach us how to live in our full strength, by living according to the laws of the universe that enable us to live powerfully with dignity while supporting the good of all.
The Tao, or The Way, is a spiritual philosophy that traces its origins back nearly 4,800 years. The Tao Te Ching is the most commonly associated text in "Taoism". It was written only some 2,500 years ago. Tao has many interpretations, maybe as many as there are people who encounter it. However, there are basic common principles and ideas associated with Tao. It's influence on Buddhism and Confuciousism are clear.
Tao is the source of everything. It is the essence behind God. It is the flow of the Universe. It is unnameable and unknowable. The Tao does nothing, yet through it all things are done. It is work without effort, leading by following. Returning is it’s movement; yielding is it’s way. The Tao cannot be grasped, but it can be used. It is empty, yet produces all things.
Dedicated student of the Tao, John Frederick will be discussing these concepts, and discuss how we can learn how to walk through this world with minimal effort, and yet still accomplish many things.
