Introduction

Hi, I'm Doug. I've always loved traveling around the U.S., Europe and Canada, and I enjoy any opportunity to go to cultural festivals, dine on exotic food and meet fellow wanderers. I'm looking forward to meeting friends here who enjoy the world!

What kind of activities do you want to do with our group? Flying? Skydiving? Kayaking? Hiking? Or light adventures like dinner & a movie?

Everything . . . I love outdoor adventures, festivals, music and dancing, traveling to beautiful locations, and enjoying food with names I can hardly pronounce, the more seasoned the better! I've always believed in tasting the richness of life. In this area I particularly enjoy hiking, kayaking, and the folk music festivals like Old Songs and Irish 2000, where I can break out my bodhran and lay down a rhythm at the jam sessions.

What was your all time favorite trip?

That's a tough choice, the list is long. My top ten journeys would be: - Trekking across the Grand Canyon, where I took my profile picture in the Colorado River - Spending a magnificent summer working in Glacier National Park and hiking in the stunning Northern Rockies - Driving the back roads of the Scottish Highlands, feeling like I had wandered into Middle Earth - Touring the ancient German villages of the Rhine River Valley and the cities of Austria - Watching the entire skyline light up with fireworks on New Year's Eve from a hilltop near Waldau, Germany - Watching the shadow of Mount Shasta at sunrise cast over the 7,000 foot peaks far below as I scaled that magnificent summit - Sailing a Swedish fjord with friends from East Germany - Road-tripping up the Oregon Coast, drinking in vistas of sea cliffs and wildflowers - Whitewater rafting in Royal Gorge in Colorado - Bike touring the White Mountains and Maine coast and sea kayaking Pemaquid Harbor

What's the next trip you're planning?

Next spring I'm going to take my father on an overnight hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and rafting on the Colorado River through Glen Canyon below Lake Powell. My dream list includes New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, Nepal, Alaska, and Costa Rica. I also want to explore more of New England, the Rocky Mountains, and the Pacific Northwest.

Favorite weekend trip?

Vermont is my favorite place to visit around here. Listening to the loons call while kayaking on Somerset Reservoir in the fall, or sailing on Lake Champlain near Burlington into a summer sunset is magical! Ithaca and the the Finger Lakes will always have a special place in my heart too, after years of grad school at Cornell university.

Favorite day trip from Albany?

Going to music and harvest festivals, biking the back roads, and kayaking the local rivers, creeks and lakes are my favorite day trips in this area.

  • Hey Doug! I'm looking forward to hiking and swapping some Rocky Mt. stories with you, too. I have some High Peaks in my immediate future but am always scanning planned trips to slip some other fun in as well. I hope to plan a trip to Chimney Mt. and Eagle Cave soon.
