Elements of Writing Challenge:
Economy of Words
When readers encounter writing in which every word counts, they are more alert to its meaning and more attentive to its sound. Concise writing doesn't require that you make every sentence short, but that you make every word count.
Step 1: Write something about 2-3 minutes reading length. Format, genre, characters, topic is up to you.
Step 2: Take what you have written and cut it in half. Be sure the main plot points and things that are most important are included.
Step 3: Cut it in half again.
Step 4: Bring all three versions to the meeting. We will listen to all three and discuss.
Some discussion questions for consideration:
Did knowing you would be doing the cuts change your writing of the first draft?
What suffered in the first cut? Description? Dialogue? Characters? Background?
How did you decide what was most important for the final cut?
Which version did you ultimately prefer?
