Cochiti Triathlon / Adventure Race - safety kayakers needed

This location is shown only to members

The New Mexico Adventure Racing Club and Sports Systems have revived the Cochiti Lake Triathlon, and added an 8hr Sprint Adventure Race. To help make the Triathlon and adventure race a safer, more successful race, they need safety kayakers to assist swimmers, as needed, during the swim portion of the triathlon.

The swim portion will be a standard 1.5k swim, wave start, in a triangular pattern. 6 - 12 safety kayakers will be needed inside and outside of the triangle. In addition to safety kayakers, there will be larger power boats with trained life-guards to assist. Kayakers are needed, mostly, so that a swimmer who is out of breath, can swim over to the kayak, catch their breath and rest temporarily, then continue swimming.

Volunteers will receive a $20 gift card to Sports Systems, a Volunteer T-shirt, and a free BBQ lunch.

6:00am - Volunteers are asked to arrive at Cochiti Lake Recreation Area, on the West side of the lake
6:45am - kayakers on the water, in position for start of race
7:00am - Race begins, various legs with staggered start times
8:30am - anticipated time for last swimmer

11:00am - BBQ served

New Mexico Kayak Instruction will provide a limited number of boats for Volunteers at this event. If you have your own boat, you're encouraged to bring it.

I helped with a number of these triathlons in Dallas, and they were a lot of fun....not to mention inspirational to see the physical challenges they go thru. The race directors and participants are/were always grateful for kayak support, and it seemed like a great way to involve the growing paddling community here in NM. Come out and help us for a few hours, then we can paddle around for a few more hours before the BBQ is served. If anyone is interested in staying longer, please note here.

I dropped a couple more Cochiti Tri pix into the file. Most of mine echoed Alex's...good shots Alex!

What an awesome day. Thanks for everyone who came to support the athletes. I think they'll want us to come back and do this again :)

With experiences like this how can I not keep showing up! This was awesome in so many ways, the lake, the weather, the athletes. Hats off to all the planners, especially Kelly for bringing us along and making us a part of the triathlon. I will definitely be looking for opportunities to get out on Cochiti Lake at different times of the year to experience the seasons out there - except next time with a camera and sound recorder.

This was my first activity with this group. It was great meeting other people who are interested in paddling.

The athletes were very appreciative of the breaks and even those who did not need a break were thankful for the reassurance of having us there. Thanks to Kelly for putting it together and supplying boats. Thanks to Mike for showing me how to spot tired swimmers. The wind driven waves made it difficult to see the athletes in the water but I quickly gained the confidence to paddle right in the middle of them while staying out of their way. I will definitely do this again!

Sports Systems did a fantastic job coordinating the entire event from start to finish. Volunteers for the different required functions were well informed and directed. Our group was led by Kelly, he did a great job sharing information and outfitting.
