Book Discussion: Angel's Game, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Come to Old Town Alexandria on the second Tuesday of each month, to discuss our book selection with other readers.

This month's book is Angel's Game, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

The narrator is David Martin, an orphan brought up in Dickensian squalor. After years of struggle, he achieves success by writing a popular series of "penny dreadfuls" called City of the Damned. In time, his work comes to the attention of Andreas Corelli, a Parisian publisher with a Faustian proposition for David. He offers to pay the writer if he will use his narrative gifts to create a viable new religion. The extraordinary tale that follows is many things at once: mystery, love story, supernatural thriller, historical drama, gothic romance, and meditation on the primal importance of stories.

Great as always. Had fun. Just what I was hoping for. Ordered the book as well as the prisoner of heaven followup.

I read Shadow of the Wind first (on audio--the Barcelona accents were amazing) and totally fell in love. I've read two other books by Zafon, outside this universe of his, but Shadow's definitely my favorite still. I think I liked Prisoner a lot because it shares more of the same characters. But who can resist any reference to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books?

Should I read the entire book before the meeting? This is a long one. I can do about 75% but not sure I'll finish.

Do your best, ToluGrace. But don't sweat it. There's certainly no Book Police checking to see that you've finished it! You are welcome to come even if you haven't. (There may be spoilers during the discussion, though.)

I wish I could attend this one :-( If anyone wants to talk on the Meetup discussion board or through email with me about this book, send me a message through meetup! Shadow of the Wind by the same author (same "universe") is one of my favorite books.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
