For March, we've switched to our new monthly meeting day, the 3rd Tuesday of the month.
We'll discuss J.K. Rowling's The Casual Vacancy. Set in an idyllic British town called Pagford, the novel begins with the untimely death of beloved parish councillor Barry Fairbrother. With a vacancy on the council, conflict ensues, factions develop, and those running for the position find their darkest secrets revealed in the Council's online forum. In her first novel after the phenomenally successful Harry Potter series, Rowling tackles class, politics, drugs, prostitution, and rape. Within its first three weeks, the book's sales topped a million copies and set a Goodreads record for the all-time biggest "started reading" day. Some readers love it; other hate it. Reviewers call it darkly comic and thought-provoking. What do you think?
