See the classic film, "The Last Picture Show," with discussion after

Join us at The Last Picture Show

The West Orange Film Society holds an excellent classic film festival each year. The AMC Theater, where it is held, is one of those theaters that serves food and beverages to you at your seat if you are so inclined. Feel free to indulge.

I am providing you with the full schedule below, in case you want to see other films in the series, but the #1 choice in our poll is The Last Picture Show.  I might schedule another, but not many of you answered the poll.  Go to the poll, and let me know which other movie you want to see most: Poll

Rotten Tomatoes says this, "Produced by Hollywood iconoclast BBS Productions, film critic-turned-director Peter Bogdanovich's 1971 film pays homage to Hollywood's classical age as it chronicles generational rites of passage in Anarene, a fictional one-horse Texas town.  Making excellent use of its period and setting, Bogdanovich's small town coming-of-age story is a sad but moving classic filled with impressive performances."

Stephen Whitty, or another critic or cinephile will lead a discussion after the film. I have scheduled our meetup for 1:30, and the screening will begin at 2:00. Ticket prices are $10.00 ($7.50 for members of the West Orange Arts Council)
If you are near West Orange, you might want to buy your ticket at the box office in advance.  Tickets are also  available on Fandango.

I don't want anyone, especially if you are driving from afar, to be disappointed, so if advance purchase is not feasible, just arrive early!

Good choice. I would have liked more background information on actors, but over all a really nice day.

To those of you who asked what the governor of Maine's name is; it's Paul LePage. He appears to be a no nonsense type who has given notice to the special interest groups just how business is going to be run, e.g. told one group who never checked/called for his comment yet printed a false story about him, where they could go. He will give Christie a run for his $$.

Thank you, Ken! Saw the movie on TV years ago but it was so much better on the big screen.
I'm not an opera fan but seeing La Boheme on April 5 at the same theater is worth considering.

Good meetup. Enjoyed the film, the discussion, and the dinner and conversation after. Thanks for organizing, Ken. Now if only the Seahawks would win, I'll also be $5 richer.

The film was one of the Best. No wonder it is a classic. The discussion was good - the convener was good, and questions were interesting.

I'm sorry I have to cancel as I am not feeling well. If anyone wants a ticket I can scan it to you

McLoone's Boathouse might be a good middle of the road option for dinner. It's 3 miles from Essex Green - at the intersection of Pleasant Valley and Northfield. Will be nicer than going to a Panera or TGI Fridays but not expensive like the Highlawn or Manor.

It is a much better idea to buy your ticket online in advance. Here's the link: http://www.fandango.c...

If you don't buy in advance, I would plan on arriving between 1:15 and 1:30.

Based on the responses, I did a rough count and it looks like 7 for dinner. I'm thinking I will make a reservation at McLoone's for 4:30. Look forward to meeting everyone.

      Thanks so much!

      January 27, 2014

    • ken k.

I see it is a 2 hour movie, and since they don't always start right on time, and there will be discussion afterwards, and a little time needed to get to McLoones, you might want to make the reservation for slightly later.

      January 27, 2014

  • Mary

I am very open to whatever the majority rules for eating out afterwards. But for my two cents, for whatever it's worth, the McLoone's Boathouse sounds interesting. Mind you, I have never been there and I am a fairly a newcomer to this Meetup, so I leave it to all who knows the restaurants. But with all said and done, I am looking forward to meeting the Alive & Kicking crowd.

Staying at Essex Green seem like a good idea to me.
Convenient without any complications. TGI Fridays
    seems fine.

    Donna,
Talked to Judy Stice & dinner sounds good to me too. We need to think about where to go in WO. My sister lives in WO-I'll ask her for places.

Their is a place on Main Street call the Oak

      January 19, 2014

  • ken k.

Go figure, apparently some of you do want to go out after the movie. Essex Green Grand Buffet, TGI Fridays, and Panera Bread are all right there at Essex Green Shopping Center where the theater is. Frank's Pizza Reastaurant (no alcohol) and Starlite Restaurant and Pizza (with alcohol) are 2 other nearby casual restaurants. A nicer Italian restaurant is Primavera Ristorante. Fancier and pricier restaurants include The Manor and Highlawn Pavilion (which has spectacular view of NYC)

  • Eileen H.

I emailed my sister and should hear back from her tomorrow. I have choir practise after work, so I may not get back to all of you with places until Tues. In the meantime, if anyone else has any suggestions, jump in with them.

My seat is F12, on the opposite end of the row Ken is in. I'm not trying to avoid you, Ken, but I wanted an aisle seat, and hopefully we'll fill in the seats in-between.

    Donna,
That analogy about a super bowl was great. It made me LOL! I'll ask my friend if she is interested in dinner after the movie.

    January 19, 2014

  • Donna M

I'd still like to go out for dinner after the movie if anyone else wants to. (As the joke goes, my idea of a Superbowl is a toilet that cleans itself.)

I have put the Feb 2 film on my calendar. Are all the meeting listed at the same theatre and same time?

    December 18, 2013

    • ken k.

All the films are screened at the same theater at 2:00, but I am not going to schedule them all as meetups for this group. Our meetup is scheduled for 1:30, a half hour before the start of the film.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
