Join the Huguenots of Spitalfields Festival to celebrate their achievements and contributions to London. Wearing Spitalfields silk in the early c18 was a real status symbol as a dress would have taken months to weave and days to sew.
Try traditional weaving and spinning with the London Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. Find out your heritage at the Huguenot Society. See demonstrations of tapestry, quilting, lace-making and embroidery in Spitalfields Market. Listen to the premiere of Wax and Yarn by Nina Perry, composed specifically for the event.
Spitalfields has a long history of immigration. It boasts Georgian houses, independent shops, pubs and even its own Hawksmoor church.
We will meet at the English Restaurant for a quick coffee before walking across to the market. This is an informal event so feel free to come and go as you please. If the weather is clear, we can round off with cocktails at Sushi Samba up the Heron Tower.
