A production of our fellow member Jeremy Gray. Opera by Thomas Arne, the greatest English composer of the late Baroque - extracts from Alfred (incl Rule, Britannia!) and the rarely heard Judgment of Paris. Performed by Bampton Classical Opera, one of the the UK's leading small companies, specialists in rare 18th century opera. Jeremy will busy dealing with the press so we will have drinks with the performers afterwards. My seat is in row E (stalls).
This was my first event since joining the group, a very enjoyable concert of both the familiar (Arne's Alfred ends with Rule Britannia) and the unfamiliar (Arne's Judgement of Paris). The soloists were excellent (the aria "Gracious Heav'n, O hear me" in Alfred was especially memorable) and they were also very good actors. And it was a pleasure to meet fellow group members Andrea and Jeremy.

I'm hardly impartial as I run Bampton Classical Opera - but it was an excellent performance in every respect!

Congratulations to Jeremy for staging this marvellous event of rarely performed Arne. A great performance from the chamber orchestra and quintet of young singers. It's sadly unusual to have singers who can also act and communicate with the audience. The trio of Greek goddesses vying after the golden apple had me in stitches as they sang "turn to me for I am she". Singing is thirsty work and we all adjoined to the nearest pub after the sell-out show.

Pub afterwards is always a good idea - we all know how thirsty singing gets *wink*

Thanks for posting this as a Meetup, Andrea. I'm afraid I can't be available before as we already have a Press launch party, and the interval is not good either as I have to be around to deal with any issues arising. But we are bound to go to the pub afterwards, and it's likely some of the musicians will too. I'll find out which one in due course and then we can perhaps meet-up then (esp as it's a Saturday night).

Hi Jeremy - Hosting simply means getting to the venue about 15 minutes early and "meet and greet" members, especially new ones, and having a drink during the interval(s) and/or afterwards. In fact, it's exactly the same as if one is not the host! It's not a problem if you have lots of other tasks to do, but if you can arrange for us to meet up with the singers etc it will be marvellous. See you soon.

And yes, Tom Guthrie sang in several of our productions and directed a couple, but it's some years ago now and we've rather lost touch with him since.

Thanks, Andrea - yes, I'm one of the artistic directors of Bampton. I will be doing the linking narration at the Wigmore performance, so I may be a little too involved to be 'host', but explain what that would involve and I'll see what I can do. The Oxford Times - which admittedly doesn't have a particularly scholarly line in arts criticism - said of our Oxford performance: "lively, heartfelt singing from a splendid cast... period instrument orchestra complemented the singers perfectly".

Hi Jeremy
Marvellous! Is this one of your own groups? Would you be happy to host the event if I made it into a Meetup?
