Matthäus-Passion (donation)

This location is shown only to members

Passiontide comes early to West London. I join the London Bach Players & Consort, conducted by Sandy Burnett, in the Bach masterpiece for solo voices, double choir (there will be 40+ singers) and double orchestra. For your entertainment I will pretend to be a young German child in Movement No.1. Here are videos of the opening number and final chorus.

For diligent members, the score can be downloaded free from IMSLP here.

St Michael and All Angels is an intimate church in the Bedford Park conservation area - ideal with church, pub and Tube station within a minute's walk from each other. As usual, we will be meeting the performers afterwards in the pub. Although the same programme is available in the London Handel Festival, it will set you back a whopping £40. Come here for a small donation and spend the rest on drink instead!

The retiring collection is for Upper Room, a local charity supporting homeless people. No one escapes the ferocious nuns at the door. You have been warned!

Those of you who were let down by the weather missed a treat. The soloists, especially the Evangelista and Alto, were superb. There were appearances of a pair of recorders, harpsichord, chamber organ and virtuosic viola de gamba. Even without cuts, we managed to finish before closing time for a swift half. There was the additional irony that I was invited to join the Deutscher Chor (I fooled everyone with my fake German).
