LHF: The English Taste (students free)

This location is shown only to members

The Royal Academy of Music Baroque Orchestra, directed by harpsichordist and head of historical performance Laurence Cummings, presents a programme of English music by Händel and his contemporaries.

The Händel pieces are Concerto Grosso in Bb (HMV312), Suite from Water Music (HMV348-350) and the lovely but rarely performed cantata Cecilia vogli un sguardo (HMV89). Other pieces to be performed include La Folia (Corelli) and Concerto Gross No.9 in C (Scarlatti).

Tickets cost £10 (free for students - simply show your student ID on arrival) and seating is unreserved. Online booking can be made via this link.

St George's Hanover Square, a stone's throw from Brook Street, is one of the churches built under Queen Anne's Act (1711) and Händel's own parish church. Here are my Flickr photos.

Due to early start time, we will meet at the church and go out for drinks after the concert.

I arrived just as the first concerto gross started - not sure about the 7pm start (hence the reason for only 4 stars). RAM students are always technically excellent and passionate in their performance and tonight was no exception. Maybe it was me or is director Laurence Cummings looking more like Hester Blumenthal these days? There was an amusing talk about the different suites of the Water Music, very apt with the heavy rain outside! The highlight for me was the cantata Cecilia, volgi un sguardo, with its sparkling coloratura from top sop Jennifer France and tenor (?) Rupert Charlesworth. The latter is one to watch out for, although his Italian was rather odd. We rounded off the evening with drinks and dinner at the neighbouring Mason Arms.
