Specialist period ensemble London Early Opera, directed by harpsichordist Bridget Cunningham, presents a programme of music associated with Vauxhall Gardens. I am waiting to hear back on the exact pieces to be performed.

Here are links about LEO, the concert and its illustrious players.

St Peter Vauxhall is a Victorian AC church by Pearson, with its altar on the original site of the garden fountain. Here are photos of the church by fellow Flickrer LondonConstant.

...but very good value, all the same. The communion wine went down well too!

I was reliably misinformed that this concert was free. Please accept my apologies.

This is the main event of Music Festival, fundraising for the church organ to be restored. We started with a sparkling cantata by Arne (he wrote Rule Britannia), beautifully sung by sop Ildiko Allen. The short pieces chosen showed the variety of music performed, and with the entertaining narration from Dr Alan Borg, gave us a glimpse of the sheer fabulousness of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens in its heyday. The blend between singers and musicians, all on period instruments, was excellent. The church acoustics were supportive without being "boomy" - I could hear every word and semiquaver. What's more, I was even invited to photograph the church and sing at choral evensong next week.
